Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith tangles with a quirk of Arkansas history

On the wildflower-studded slopes of the Ozarks, where memories run long and family ties run thick, a little-known and long-ago chapter of history still simmers. On Sept. 11, 1857, a wagon train from this part of Arkansas met with a gruesome fate in Utah, where most of the travelers were slaughtered by a Mormon militia in an episode known as the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Hundreds of the victims’ descendants still populate these hills and commemorate the killings, which they have come to call “the first 9/11.”

Many of the locals grew up hearing denunciations of Mormonism from the pulpit on Sundays, and tales of the massacre from older relatives who considered Mormons “evil.”
“There have been Fancher family reunions for 150 years, and the massacre comes up at every one of them,” said Scott Fancher, 58, who traces his lineage back to 26 members of the wagon train, which was known as the Fancher-Baker party. “The more whiskey we drunk, the more resentful we got.”

There aren’t many places in America more likely to be suspicious of Mormonism — and potentially more problematic for Mitt Romney, who is seeking to become the country’s first Mormon president. Not only do many here retain a personal antipathy toward the religion and its followers, but they also tend to be Christian evangelicals, many of whom view Mormonism as a cult.
And yet, there is scant evidence that Romney’s religion is making much difference in how voters here are thinking about the presidential election and whether they are willing to back the former Massachusetts governor.

Seriously WaPo? Romneys high School antics not enough we're going to tie him into a Massacre committed in 1857 now?

OK, some hillbillies in Arkansas are still pissed off at Mormons due to an 1857 massacre of some of their "kin"? They must be Liberals.

The people that feel this way, would have felt that way whether or not some dink wrote an article about it right?

Just like when JFK ran, people said, "The Pope would be running the US." It never happened. I wonder if things like the economy, unemployment, etc will even be a discussion issue this coming election compare to the very serious topics like this one.

LDS is a cult. It's a completely bogus religion.

You'd think Romney would be pounding on these things 24/7. That and the exploded deficit and things like Solendra.

The relevance of Romney's religion to the history of Arkansas is as important as Obama's religion is to Middle Eastern history.

It'd be about as dumb as blaming Kennedy for the Crusades and Inquisition.

Well, duh. Who's blaming him? Some evangelical hillbillies that probably identify themselves as Republicans, loved Newt till he became a Pope lovin' Catholic for the Joker's sister, and believe that Obama is a Kenyan and yet still have a hardon for Mormons. Not exactly Code Pink types. A guy wrote a story about them having a hardon. It ain't his fault they aren't willing to let it go.

Like it or not someone's spiritual beliefs can say a lot about their personal level of credulity.

Who is more likely to be an idiot; a reformed jew or a militant scientologist?

That being said the real question is; will Mitt wear his magic underwear in the White House?

As a Mormon myself, while inactive, I still consider myself a stand up guy.

The values that were instilled in me by being a member of the Church, along with my Father building upon them, sent me in a direction that those I am close to can trust me no matter what.

While this cannot be said of all Mormons, I would wager the majority hold the same values.

Now, while you choose to belittle our Faith, I call into question your credibility, given you cannot attack the man, only his beliefs………….

Just a little titbit, were you aware that the LDS were on scene with aid, before the Federal Government could get their act together after Katrina. They do this on a regular basis where aid is needed, But choose not to advertise the fact…………….

Frankly, I think all religions are easy targets for ridicule. The old ones just have more historical gravity behind them. I do think there is an inherent good in their message for people who choose to use it in a positive way. I was raised as a Catholic. Everyone knows about the scandals and the historical levels of crazy that have been perpetrated in the name of the Church. At the same time they have done amazing things to help countless numbers of people.

The LDS suffers from an image problem apparently. But in general they probably do many positive things for people. Good for them.

I firmly believe that politicians in this country are forced to seem more religious than they actually are for the sake of pragmatism, and to appeal to ignorant sh*theads....but if they remember a few lessons like "do unto others" then it ain't all bad.
