    Default Iran face-off drives new naval small ship focus

    Western navies have built large, expensive warships, which are looking increasingly vulnerable to thousands of small, fast Iranian attack boats.

    This month, Britain's Ministry of Defense Developments, Concepts and Doctrine Center (DCDC) released their blueprint for a new class of ship they believe could become the mainstay of the fleet - the "Black Swan-class sloop".

    The DCDC estimate the cost per vessel could be as low as some 65 million pounds, allowing several to be built for the cost of one large state-of-the-art destroyer. With a crew that could be as low as eight or as high as 60 when circumstances demanded, its flight deck could operate either a large troop-carrying Chinook helicopter or a menagerie of unmanned drones and weapons systems, although such extras would cost more.
    wasn´t that pretty much the same thing that the US tried with the mess now called Littoral Combat Ship? One can only hope the British take a long hard look at that program ...

    If you count what are essentialy oversized fiberglass bathtubs with a motor and a machine gun as FABs then over a thousand vessels doesn't seem like a stretch.

    Iran has more then 3000 speedboats and fast attack boats. They are being mass produced by the MOD. They are also currently in use for patrolls

    The Iranian MOD should save some money and not bother with life vests, the Mk45 gun mounts won't leave much left except maybe those silly green headbands.

    I wouldn´t be so sure of that ... there are quite a few videos on youtube of guns on large warships attempting to take out small boats a few hundred meters away. Heavy machine guns, even gatling cannons (one American vid with a red drone target boat and a Russian vid of sailors shooting at a pirate vessel, I am sure someone here knows them and has a link)...

    the results are pretty pathetic, looong bursts, massive waste of ammo, rounds going all over the place but nowhere near target ... now and then one lucky round out of hundred or a hundred and fifty actually seemed to hit. I wouldn´t feel at all safe on a destroyer or frigate that is attacked by twenty ot thirty of these boats at once.

    @IRN34:

    what weapons are those boats in the video using? Didn´t look like machine guns or RPGs, more like small missiles fired from some sort of multiple launcher?

    Even if they were successful in damaging a couple ships (FAB's are not going to sink a warship) it would be a pyrrhic victory because in round two the USN would return like an angry God to lay waste to every military installation on the Iranian coastline.

    Of course in a scenario that involves a 'swarm' attack the odds of your ships getting hit are indeed high.

    Send in the hordes of FAB's and call it a day right?

    I think it would be a bit more complicated than just FAB's. That is of course, just my assumption

    No country in the world is as prepared to confront the United States as Iran is. I pray that confrontation never happens.
