This is possibly the most interesting documentary I've ever seen. It's titled The Century of the Self, and I believe it came out in 2002. It was produced by Adam Curtis.
Essentially, it's about how certain powerful, scientific techniques were pioneered in the Western, democratic societies to condition the perceptions of the public, and the political ramifications of that phenomenon. The documentary is very factual, and not oriented toward conspiracy and dubious conjecture.
I've only posted part one of four, but the other parts are easy to find on YT. This part is mostly about Edward Bernays. He was the nephew of Sigmund Freud, and the father of the modern PR industry. In part three, I have to say, the story takes a really mind-bending turn (and is somewhat disheartening)...
If even one person decides to watch this, I will be stoked. If no one does, then at least I tried.
