Firefighters were still battling a blaze in a nuclear submarine late Wednesday at a U.S. Navy shipyard in Maine - six hours after their initial response to it, a shipyard spokesman said

Kittery, Maine — The Groton-based USS Miami nuclear-powered attack submarine caught fire at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard late Wednesday afternoon.

The fire, which began at around 5:45 p.m., was still burning early Thursday morning but shipyard spokesman Capt. Bryant Fuller said in a statement that the situation was improving.

The fire injured six people, including a firefighter. The shipyard said the injured people were treated and released. The firefighter suffered heat exhaustion.

Shipyard public affairs specialist Gary Hildreth told the Herald that the fire was in the forward compartment of the ship and all nonessential personnel were ordered to evacuate.

The submarine's reactor was not operating when the fire started and was not affected by the blaze, shipyard spokeswoman Bridget Church said.
The reactors are not threatened.. the crew is normally quartered in barracks when in the shipyard.

Its been in dry dock since March for a major overhaul, so I think they would have offloaded most if not all weapons.

I hope the injured and the sub recover well, here's hoping nothing was too badly damaged.

Heh, this fire happened on the same day a small fire broke out on one of our very own RFA tankers.

The original article specifically said that weapons were not aboard.

It is fantastic that this happened while the boat was in port, rather than underway.

That would explain it for me. Drier and kitchen fires are not unknown while being underway but throw contractors into the mix and its no surprise. Speaking of fires aboard ship, the AT instructor I had served aboard the USS America when it was deployed to GW1. Not sure if he was using hyperbole but he mentioned they had a 1 fire per day onboard while underway. Their nickname for the ship was the raggedy-pig.

I was on the America in '81. She was the dirtiest ship I ever served on..

There were not fires everyday but fires on CVs occur frequently. Most often they are nothing but vent dust, Trash, electrical. And generally quickly extinguished.

If fire gets to the hull insulation it gets really, really hard to put out. Still waiting to hear on the cause.
