Default Our 'other man in Damascus,' the spy who was sent out into the cold

A new book, "From Jerusalem to Damascus and Back — An Intelligence Agent’s Story," tells the incredible story of Massoud Bouton, an Israeli agent operating in Beirut and Damascus on behalf of the Mossad.

    Nadav Shragai

Mustafa Taleb, a member of Unit 131 of Israel’s military intelligence service, “died” in early 1962. Massoud Bouton, who shed his identity as Taleb, lived for another 49 years. He died in Strasbourg, France, on May 26, 2011, alone, brokenhearted and destitute, waiting in vain for some acknowledgment or a word of thanks from the country he had served with such self-sacrifice.

From 1956 to 1962, Bouton lived under an assumed identity. He pretended to be a wealthy Algerian businessman named Mustafa Taleb, a devout Muslim. He prayed in mosques in Algeria, Libya, Damascus and Beirut, fasted during Ramadan and, in his role as an Arab, cheered the enemies of Israel with the Syrian masses. For seven years, Bouton-Taleb worked as an agent among the enemy, providing Israel with intelligence reports and political assessments and putting himself in life-threatening danger. A small Morse code transmitter served as his voice. At that time, when the Israeli intelligence service and the Mossad were just starting out, Bouton-Taleb, a former combat soldier in the pre-state paramilitary group the Irgun, was legally married to two different women. His wife Esther, whom he had married as a young man, waited for him in Jerusalem. Keeping his secret locked in her heart, she coped every day with his absence and her longing for him as she raised their two children, Ehud and Naomi. He married his other wife, Surmeri, before a qadi in Beirut, according to Islamic religious law. Surmeri, who was part of Bouton's cover, was also his wife for all intents and purposes at the time.

A new book, "From Jerusalem to Damascus and Back — An Intelligence Agent’s Story" is now, finally being published. It was written by Bouton together with journalist Roni Shaked. It is a difficult story, and some of it is hard to comprehend. The security establishment delayed the book’s publication for years, as it portrays the men who headed Israel’s intelligence service during those years as insensitive, vindictive and having an incredibly large chip on their shoulder.

    ---------------------------------

The story of this spy is unknown and is very interesting.
The publication of the book telling it was forbidden by the censorship during the lifetime of the superiors of Massoud Bouton in the Mossad. This is regrettable because we won't ever have their version. Massoud accuses them for a mistake that may had led to the capture of the legendary spy, and national hero, Elie Cohen, who replaced Massoud in Damascus.

Isn't it widely accepted that Eli Cohen (RIP) was captured due to the Soviets tracking his messages and locating his Damascus apartment as the source? His identity seemed to provide him with a very reliable cover untill the moment they caught him red handed. Of course Bouton wouldn't have known this at the time of the hanging.

The book looks like it is worth a read but what is actually true is anyones guess, especially when the matter involves disputes within an organization such as Mossad.

No doubt Bouton deserves recognition for his part in ensuring Israel's security and it is sad that his story is recieving publication only after his death.

He could not know it at the time. And even what was known to the Mossad was probably not told to him, regarding the circumstances in which he left the agency and the country.
The doubt about the reason for which Eli Cohen was captured made him probably suffer during long years.

If I'm not mistaken, there was a little problem with the identity of Eli Cohen. His operators made the mistake to put him in relation with another spy that operated in Egypt. (An agent that had the identity of a German businessman.) Thus, they endangered them both. I don't remember exactly the details…

    Yes.
But we should check if was put in contact with Eli Cohen, or anyone else in Egypt , because I don't trust my memory.

    EDIT:

If I'm not wrong, the Syrians were informed by the Soviets that an Israeli spy operates in Damascus. The information came from Egypt.
There were suspicious facts pointing at Eli Cohen, but as he had powerful relations no one could believe it.
Later, he was captured because the Soviets trucked his transmissions.

My memory betrayed me and I was messed different stories.
But I was right to remember that there was a problem with sending Eli Cohen to Syria.

1/ Eli was an Egyptian born Jew and started to work for the Israeli intelligence when he lived already in Egypt.
2/ He was suspected by the Egyptian security services and was arrested twice in the early 1950s, including for his involvement in the Lavon fiasco. But he was released for no evidence.
3/ When Eli Cohen arrived in Syria, the Syrians had already a copy of his file from the Egyptian Mukhabarat, because the archives of both countries were united during the period of the failed attempt by Syria and Egypt to form an united Arab republic. Therefore, the risk that was taken to send Eli Cohen to Syria was the same as if he was sent back to Egypt!

The real circumstance of the capture of Eli Cohen are not clear enough and remain to be confirmed. There's a probability that we still don't know important facts.
Last year, a radio program by Jacky Hougy was broadcasted on IDF Radio about the latest informations concerning Eli's capture.
