USAF Outlines Nuke Weapon Inventory Modernization

    May. 24, 2012 - 03:33PM | By MARCUS WEISGERBER

The U.S. Air Force is moving ahead with plans to modernize its inventory of nuclear weapons and delivery systems, a top service general said.

The Air Force plans to maintain and modernize its Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles and extend the life of the air-launched cruise missile (ALCM) so both last until at least 2030, according to Maj. Gen. William Chambers, assistant chief of staff for strategic deterrence and nuclear integration at the Pentagon.

So basically another announcement of, "since we're going to let our infrastructure deteriorate into dust so we better keep upgrading these 35 year old missiles". Russia and China must be pissing themselves laughing.

Bomber R&D and upgrade activities slowly getting more funding.

Also soon some initial decisions on replacement cruise missile should be made..

What about PGS? Has it gotten a green light?

You know how many times a bomber program has been floated? Was one ever built? This one won't be either. PGS? Prompt Global Strike? It's a concept that hasn't even been considered for production. (Or even decided what it would be if they did want to produce it.) There's not a single new nuclear delivery system that's further along than a powerpoint slide in the US.

I mean there must be something in R&D labs , drawing board , concept etc that may not have been approved or fully funded but exists some where ?

BTW in this economic crises both in US and Europe , why doesnt US/NATO work together in jointly developing SSBN , ICBM , SLBM and other strategic weapons , both France and UK have similar assets and can co-develop with US saving on cost and getting both sides to share the burden.

Did US or NATO think on those lines ?

Russia seems to be testing a bunch of stuff...with mixed success....I think I recall a Russian SLBM test going all kinds of fireworks not long ago? Wasn't that posted here?

And what have the Russians actually fielded? Or are realistically about to field?

The British and USN SLBM program IS joint. Both use Trident II and will share a common missile compartment design on their next SSBNs. The French SLBM program is independent because they have EADS Astrium, the money they spend on an independent missile program also benefits their healthy space launch program.
