Sounds like a moral killer to me.
http://www.military.com/daily-news/2...ifle-mags.htmlThe Army has ordered that soldiers may use only government-issued magazines with their M4 carbines, a move that effectively bans one of the most dependable and widely used commercial-made magazines on today’s battlefield.
...
The message did not single out PMAGs, but instead authorizes only the use of Army-issued aluminum magazines. The message offers little explanation for the new policy except to state that “Units are only authorized to use the Army-authorized magazines listed in the technical manuals.” Nor does it say what Army units should now do with the millions of dollars’ worth of PMAGs they’ve purchased over the years.
So, I wonder which general at TACOM Life Cycle Management Command got a call from his retired buddy who works Brownell's complaining about the lack of orders for their product?
Good luck enforcing this one, Army Brass.
Sounds like a moral killer to me.
"nothing is too good for the troops, therefore nothing is what they shall get"... It would seem much of the same goes on here in Canada. Constant restrictions and regulations against the most dependable equipment. Its downright upsetting.
What's the issue? If soldiers want to pay for gear out of their own pockets, let them!
This seems stupid, no real reason for the rule what so ever...
Odd, since the PMAG has an NSN.
It also says the the CProducts, HK and FN mags that are issued with different systems are also no-go's. We are in peace time now guys, look for the dress-right-dress and standardization of gear to come back with a CSM vengeance. Many units have already started. No non-standard weapons in training or use, rack them and grab the issue M4. Move your pouches here and here. You will load your kit with X, Y, and Z and we don't care what your MOS or mission is.
So glad I don't have to deal with this bullcrap anymore. I seriously do not miss the service at all.
We ordered 200 Pmags about six months back....got 200 Brownell's magazines instead so its not just the Army but possibly the entire federal system.
That's exactly what it is. The CSM sent out a memo recently basically stating that those were his intentions. They want a small clean force, leave the special stuff to the special soldiers, other blah blah stuff.
Still nothing makes me more angry than the new PRT stretches.
Well, FWIW, in 20 years of using the M16/M4 (ROTC Cadet, USMC grunt, and evil civilian commando contractor) regular GI mags have served me pretty well. I could probably count on one hand the time my mags have been the cause of failure.
If your gear is f*cked up, tell someone and get a replacement. If you roll out knowing that you have a magazine with banged up lips, a weak spring, or a bad follower, shame on you.
So does that mean all them Pmags get sold as surplus at bargain-basement prices?
I fully expect this directive to be ignored across the formations. I've got a dozen HK and PMAGs that I've used on multiple deployments, and it will literally take a direct order for me to stop using them. Too many stories are out there of the vastly increased reliability of some of these magazines, mostly coming first hand from veterans of multiple combat deployments. The HK magazines I've got have been through a LOT of use, and I have still yet to have a single issue with them. BLUF, while units may no longer be able to order as such, I expect to still see various COTS magazines on Soldiers for years to come.
