Default Two Tibetans Burn Themselves in Lhasa

Two young Tibetan men set themselves on fire in Lhasa Sunday in protest against Chinese rule—the first self-immolations reported in the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, according to sources.

They burned themselves in front of Jokhang Temple in central Lhasa—reputedly the ultimate pilgrimage destination for Tibetan pilgrims—and were swiftly bundled away by security forces who arrived in several vehicles and cleared the area within 15 minutes, the sources said.

^Exactly. If this is the first reported case and it took the Chinese authorities only 15 mins to "clean" it all away.

Posters above suggest otherwise. They instantly blamed China for cover up(although such cases are reported from time to time and they just dont bother to read them).

Nyusu: So why would the monks burn themselves in the first place? And why would anybody suggest a cover-up by Chinese?

They burn themselves because they are to stupid to realize that it not gonna give them support neither from foreign sources nor from China itself(as they see them as trouble makers). So instead of helping to normalize life in Tibet, they only create tensions with rest of China instead of helping to become normal province with same rights as the rest.

But why would there be a cover-up? Is it because "A spark can start a fire that burns the entire prairie" (星星之火可以燎原 (pinyin: xīng xīng zhī huǒ kě yǐ liáo yuán)

Why should an occupied land wants to become a "normal province with same rights as the rest" in the first place?

Because it the way how it normally works? Countries get conquered. And as they usually have no chance to break away in 5-10 years after being conquered but usually have to wait several hundreds years, it usually good idea to integrate, so in this time they would have good life instead of repressions.

Because they realize that saying it on all tv channels does make more harm then good? Same as with terrorists attacks, as it gives them free PR. While free press is great achievement of western world that we never would wish to give away anymore, at the same time it is our weak point too. We can lose wars because of reports that will reduce moral of people and they would wish to retreat when it not necessary. Chinese realize that and their system allows them to avoid it to some degree. They dont want chaos but stability, so they use such methods to stop chaos from spreading if possible. Their arent us, for them freedom can do make more harm then good, as it could live to China breaking up someday(that would hurt us strongly as well). Their methods arent acceptable for us, but at the time it only thing that works for them.

So you basicly wouldn't mind oppressive totalitarian government that tells you what to do and when? Or is it more like stability no matter what the cost is?

That depends on the alternative. You cannot forget that alternative can be much worse as its often the case. I wouldnt be happy, but i certainly wouldnt try to make situation worse.
