The multinational joint military exercise in the desert of southern Jordan It is the largest exercise of its kind in the Middle East in a decade."Eager Lion 2012", brings together more than 12,000 soldiers from 19 countries including Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Great Britain, France and the United States. King Abdullah II of Jordan is in attendance.
Major General Mekhled Al Sheim, the Jordanian spokesman says it focuses on training Jordanian and Saudi servicemen in the treatment of refugees, anti-terrorism tactics and naval interception of smuggling vessels.
He says the exercise also took place in 2001 and the drills are not directed at any particular event or country. He added that there is no relation between this exercise and the situation in Syria.The general also says Jordan’s topography is one reason why it was chosen as a location.Thursday’s exercise is the largest since "Eager Lion" began on May the 7th, and will continue to May the 30th.
