Nah, most of the vests they wear are just ammo vests. I've seen a few with body armor, but that's rare. Most are taken off the bodies of Syrian Army soldiers or black market.

Sounds like the counterfire was:
1. From a pretty damn close range
2. From a heavy machinegun (maybe a DSHk or KORD.. or anything that is 12.7mm)
