Am I missing something or are most of these stations extremely vulnerable to small arms fire? They are basically exposed MG's and Grenade launchers? A few accurate rounds from a rifle will penetrate the receiver for example and make the gun stop working.
A few guys with PKM's or even AK's could open up on these stations first and basically disable the vehicles weaponry.

... You have to stay hidden first...something that is very difficult given the level of IR and Thermal wizardries most of these RWS harbor.

It depends from what type of rcw station are you talking about.
In the lower end up to .50 they are so but as the alternative would be to expose a men to enemy fire there is still a clear advantage on adopting them.
Greater calibers tend to be better protected especially when they came in enclosed pseudo turrets like in german Puma or Oto Melara OWS.
In most cases there would be a useful compromise however: a little less protection for weaponry, much more security for crew and space for trasported personnels .

Yes they are exposed machine guns and grenade launchers but optic sensors and dc motors take the place of the gun operator. He doesn't have to be exposed to that small arms fire. Not every vehicle demands a rws but in some places where there are lots of small arms fire encounters the rws has the advantage with its optics and stabilized gun. The only draw back is that the soldier has a smaller line of sight and there is the issue with not being able to hear whats going on outside. Advancements in acoustic and optic sensors in the future will fix that.

It's RWS is armed with two 30mm cannons, two 30mm grenade launchers, four Ataka-T ATGM's, one PKT-M Medium MG, and 10 smoke grenade launcher's, with room for additional weapons.
The BMPT is based on the T-72 chassis and is designed to provide support and defense to MBT's against infantry, especially in urban environments.
Plus a machine gun of 7,62mm..
