Default Shooting at Canada mall leaves 1 dead, 7 injured

TORONTO – A gunman fired shots in a crowded food court in one of Canada's busiest malls Saturday killing a man and injuring seven others, police said.
Police constable Victor Kwong said two people were in critical condition after being shot at Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto, including a 13-year old boy, and the 25-year-old man who was killed died at the scene. Kwong said six people were shot, including the deceased.
Two people were trampled on and pushed, including a pregnant woman who went into labor after she was pushed, Kwong said. The suspect had not been apprehended, he said.
Witnesses said multiple shots were fired in the mall's food court and that hundreds of panicked shoppers sprinted for the exits. The mall, which is popular with tourists, was evacuated. Swarms of people watched from outside as an injured man with visible bullet wounds was wheeled out on a stretcher.

Jokes aside, that really sucks. Just today, I believe there was a discussion in another thread on how psychopaths target places like malls, post offices, other public areas, etc. because they know they it will be unlikely that anyone will be armed and able to return fire on them.

Thing I always find interesting is how no one ever trys to charge a gunman, because sure it's a crazy thing to do but you help give others a chance to escape if your seen and if you succeed you stop the person or give a few others enough time to get to you and help. Plus we have all heard enough people boast about being tough and fearless when confronted with danger, but than again it does seem people brag most about the things they don't have.

Always remember courage and stupidity are pretty much the same thing, but one of them is a good thing

If I am unarmed, and the guy is more than 5 feet away and directly facing me, there is no way I'd go charging him. Call me a coward, but thousands of years of evolution and the instinct of self preservation tell me this is a no-no. On top of that, I doubt anyone would be rushing to help me subdue him if I did manage to tackle him. I'm assuming most if not all would go into flight mode and be trying to get as far away as quickly as possible.

But the reality is you can never out run a bullet. Why try? If you're that close, chase the bullet. I know, easier said than done, but, at that point, you have nothing to lose, and I pray, someone will get involved to help me subdue the perp. I have no illusions that will happen, but, out running a bullet is a reality I have never ascribed too. Please help me. I will do everything I can to take the f-ucker down, but don't stand there, HELP ME!!!

I fancy that I'd do the same or throw a chair or something at him and try to distract him while rushing him, grappling him and hoping others follow suit... but until you are in that situation, you never know how you will react.

Us humans still have strong primal instincts, one of the strongest being fear. It is only logical that when you are in danger, ie. bullets flying aorund you or in your direction the first thing you do is take cover.

    R.I.P. to the decesead.

In any case, its impossible to theorize about how you'd react in a situation like this without actually being in it. Fight, flight or freeze just takes over, you can't fight it. I think most of us would hope we'd be the kinds of people who'd charge the gunman, but like Ichabod said, the survival instinct would probably take over.

    RIP, always a tragedy.

And from my POV : I can't outrun a bullet, but the farther I am from the gunman, the more chance I have at escaping and surviving. The gunman has other targets, I'm not gonna attract his attention to me by charging him.

Of course, I may act differently if the gunman is already within arms reach.

Gunman surrounded himself to the police last night. Turns out he is under "house arrest" on other charges...
