Pentagon Looks to Expand Military Relationship With Vietnam

    Jun. 3, 2012 - 10:33AM | By MARCUS WEISGERBER

CAM RANH BAY, Vietnam — The U.S. Defense Department hopes to gain greater access for Navy ships into a key port here as the Pentagon looks to broaden its military partnership with Vietnam.

U.S. naval ship access into Cam Ranh Bay “is a key component of this relationship and we see a tremendous potential here for the future,” Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said during a June 3 visit to the dry cargo ship Richard Byrd, which is making a port call here.

Panetta is the highest-ranking U.S. government official to visit Cam Ranh Bay since the Vietnam War. President Lyndon Johnson visited Cam Ranh Bay in 1966.

Unsurprising as Vietnam seems to be getting more and more cozy with the US to counter any Chinese influence.
So it makes sense that the US would take advantage of this willingness to cooperate to assert some more power projection, especially with this talk of shifting military emphasis from the Middle East to the Pacific Rim.

Of course this has nothing whatsoever to do with containing China...nothing at all.

Cam Ranh Bay. I predicted it here a few years ago that the US Navy would like to have a base there again.

As long as my next war is someplace with hot chicks and alchohol.

The Middle East has really worn thin on me.

Also, this maybe under the radar and there are regular Taiwanese members here but I will say it anyway. Taiwan needs to be closely watched as well. Every year, every election it seems prospects of re-unification becomes closer. The under the radar thing I mentioned is Taiwan is also claiming parts of Spratly's and even the recently contested Scarborough shoal. Of all claimant countries, Taiwan's claims are the next preposterous claims. The tiny island is way up north and they are claiming islands way south. And their reasoning are very much like China's reasoning - so called historical claims and fishing routes.

Just as some countries are becoming closer to the US, Taiwan may just come closer to China.

You obviously do not follow Taiwan politics closely.

The Greens lost the last election despite Jame Soong stealing votes from KMT.
Min Jin Dang (The greens) now have to engage China in order to survive. Doing that will alienate the hardcore independence supportors and will divide the party.

Lee Teng Hui, the driving force behind Taiwan independent was interviewed a few days ago and he told Taiwanese not to talk about independence because the time is gone.

Taiwan drift to independence has been stopped.

After reading a thread on USN in Bangladesh, I was wondering when this will show up. What is the condition of the wharves?

In the same vein, what about Subic Bay in the Philippines?

Dunno why the US is trying to contain China at all. It seems like a peaceful enough country. Provocative and destabilizing frankly.
