Thread: M1 Garand conversions

    Default M1 Garand conversions

Is it possible to convert an M1 Garand to accept 30 rd. magazines, and have a composite stock with pistol grip, and fore grip? How much would it cost?

How much more powerful is 30-06 than 7.62NATO?

Filipino company patented a design for a magazine conversion of the M1 Garand using M14 mags, but it was re barreled to 7.62 NATO. SO it can be done, just not sure of the cost.

Having shot both an M1 and M1A(100-300yrds) they feel similar,
    M1 is heavier.
    A 30.06 will have a bit more kick than a 308,
but IMO an M1A (308) Is more practical than a M1
I think the 308 is a good compromise for the shorter case.
You're not missing anything by having an M14 in 30.06 IMO

I looked into conversions in the past. Buying at off the shelf gun at the time was better value.

30/06 in my opinion packs more of a punch and here is favoured by the bigger game hunters over the 308. But how much more punch? Not really much. 308 throws basically the same pill (30/06 springfield can throw up to 250gr @ about2100 vs 200gr @ about 2200 for 308).

    @Tengu

    - what have you got up there that would need more medicine than a .308 and a decent pill ? You still allowed semi auto's over in Qld ?
I remember a few mausers in 7.92x57 in gunshops over. That can chuck a fair wallop.

Those pics show how much the M-14 is base on the Garand. Stick a box mag in the M1 and they almost look like the same gun.

Before you ask if you can....have you considered if you should?
It sounds like you want an M1A tacticooled out, but have you tried shooting the Garand as it was intended? It is a true pleasure to shoot. I haven't shot anything I can remember enjoying more. And converting it from 30-06 to .308 would be a real crime. By all means do what you want, its just my $.02.

    Yes, See Beretta BM 59.

The Military 30-06 and 7.62 NATO is basically the same. 30-06 can be loaded to heavier loads due to a larger case capacity.

Rest of the Q, I don't know and would not recommend it.

Is this for your "bug out" kit, for zombies, or when terrorists eventually take over the United States?

Why would you want to ruin something so perfect.

X2, That is what I was thinking. If you need a big mag just get an AK.

M1 Garand was designed as a RIFLE. Besides, the military did redesign the M1 Garand and eventually led them to the M14/M1A. Which does accept magazines (mostly 20rd standard), but still not really designed for rapid-sustained suppressive fire.

a .30M2 X 30rd double stack double feed position magazine? gonna have some significant weight to it. Cost to make the magazine itself would likely be prohibitive. there are 20 rd BAR mag conversions out there and BAR Mags are relatively cheap, reliable and handy.

Pistol grip stocks are easy the BM59 had a version and Sage makes a EBR Garand stock now

LD, I believe if they used M14 Magazines, then those 30 rd M14 mags that are available would work. I bought some from Sportsmanguide a number of years ago, they were poorly made and did not work well. Maybe there are better quality M14 30 rd Mags available, I don't know.
