Found this pdf, an in-depth study of Soviet military power/capabilities back at one of the tensest periods of the Cold War. I wasn't alive back when these were written but maybe older members will remember them (they were written yearly after 1981). They seem pretty fascinating for a Russian military history enthusiast.
Yeah, I remember those. I was a teenager at the time and our city library got a lot of books from the US embassy here. At that time Reagan was the big man and the US military was in the process of revamping itself from its post Viet Nam blues, the end result of which was the supreme military that was unleashed against Saddam's forces in 1991.
At that time 1983 it seems WW3 could happen at anytime. Reagan played hardball against the Soviets and cranked up the anti communist anti Soviet propaganda. Not to mention the Soviets really didnt make things easy on themselves either, like the shooting down of the Korean airliner in September of that year killing over 200 people including a US congressman if my memory is correct.
Anyway those Soviet Military Power books scared the living daylights out of me and my friends as they played up Soviet combat capabilities to the extreme.
