I believe a thank you to the Bulgarians is in order. Bulgaria has been a front line against the Vampires and they saved Europe.

This method of prevention is still being carried out today in the heartland of Vampireism, here in Transylvania,
official deemed a crime, in some rural areas, corpse have been disturbed after burial, decapitated, and steel nails driven into the hearts, many country villages have at least one resident "vampire hunter."

Vampirism was a very popular folk belief in eastern Europe.
The main "wave" of Vampirism was later, in the Baroque age around 1700, centered around Austria and eastern Europe (apparently it comes from slavic folklore) but spread to Germany and France.
At that time, the existence of Vampires was widely believed but all but the most enlightened of men.
The age from 1680 to 1700 was the time of the last great plague epedemics in europe, so maybe that was connected.
