I used to make some sharpish stuff as well. I was able to make slices on average 90nm thick , some thicker an some thinner. Lowest was close on 30nm.

But we used glass. And it was a bitch to fracture the glass!

I don't think it's an actual photo but a rendered representation of what's being seen. Visible light wavelengths are WAY to long to make out individual atoms.

It's an actual photo, but not taken using light.

It's more like a false colour image, or a projection. You are directly observing atoms, but not in the spectrum of light. Rather in the spectrum of ionized atoms themselves, as they are used to create the image.
