The guys assigned to the Riverine units are not SWCCs. SWCCs are part of Naval Special Warfare Command, and have their own selection course and training pipeline. The Riverine guys are regular sailors, working for Naval Expeditionary Combat Command, and come from a variety of naval ratings. They volunteer for a tour of duty with one of the three Riverine units, before rotating back to the fleet. In their "wisdom", the Navy has decided to consolidate their expeditionary security/base security units, and Riverine units, into what's now called the Coastal Riverine Force.

As unfortunate as this new "Coastal Riverine Force" is, I think it's the only way the Riverines could justify keeping themselves around. Much like snipers in the twentieth century, it's historically been a capability that's been discarded after every war it was needed, and brought up quickly when needed again. It is definitely a very niche mission set, and in peacetime might conflict with SBT-22 given that FID will likely be the focus of both communities, spec ops or not withstanding. By merging with the maritime security squadrons, it gives them the additional mission of port security and force protection.

While this could compromise the state of combat readiness the riverine squadrons have attained, it was clearly a political maneuver to keep them around when they were likely facing the prospect of getting axed completely due to downsizing and budget cuts. If the Navy had been really serious about this community, they would have created a Riverine rating, and in fact there were serious talks about it some time ago. However, like I said with the ruthless cuts likely to come at least they are still staying around in some fashion. There had been talk that they were going to send a Squadron to the Horn of Africa to help with the piracy issue, but I'm not sure what happened there.

*Also, the guys on the ground are called the Riverine Security Element, I think. Basically in-house infantry that infil and exfil on the boats. Badass vid btw, had to favorite for sure.

I do not know what these guys combat role is, but the video doesn't really inspire any great confidence in their abilitys.. Atleast not beyond what any reg. infantry could achive if inserted via RIB...
