Thread: Gun Control Act of 1968

Default Gun Control Act of 1968

What kinds of guns does the GCA prohibit the import of? Is it a form of protectionism for domestic manufacturers?

Unless they were built here under license, or by US based plants owned by foreign companies, is it actually possible to purchase authentic semi-auto versions of guns like G36, FAMAS, AK-74M, and other guns with civilian market versions that can't be imported?

With WASR 10, was it imported from Romania completed, or was an incomplete parts kit imported and put together in the US?

Could the GCA ever be repealed? Or will we be stuck having to cobble together parts kits instead of importing civilian versions of famous weapons from abroad?

GCA '68 forbids the importation of 'Saturday night specials' (cheap, short-barreled handguns). What is or is not a 'sporting pistol' is determined by a points system.

Here is an explanation of the points system for handguns:

So far as rifles, GCA '68 forbids the importation of military surplus rifles. It does not in any way forbid the importation of civilian semiauto versions of military rifles. The law that does that is 18 USC § 922, signed into law in 1989 by G.H.W. Bush. That law is explained here:

The Hughes Amendment to the 1986 Firearm Owners Protection Act has a better chance at getting repealed than the 1968 GCA. The chances of Hughes getting repealed is very, very, very, very slim.
