Thread: 1989 Gun ban

    Default 1989 Gun ban

What is the purpose of the 1989 semiautomatic ban? Was it intended as a form of protectionism for domestic manufacturers, or is it typical knee jerk political nonsense? Why is it still in effect?

I didn't think it was still in enforcement.

The Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) (or Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act) was a subtitle of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, a federal law in the United States that included a prohibition on the manufacture for civilian use of certain semi-automatic firearms, so called "assault weapons". There was no legal definition of "assault weapons" in the U.S. prior to the law's enactment. The 10-year ban was passed by Congress on September 13, 1994, and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton the same day. The ban only applied to weapons manufactured after the date of the ban's enactment.
The Federal Assault Weapons Ban expired on September 13, 2004, as part of the law's sunset provision. There have been multiple attempts to renew the ban,[1] but no bill has reached the floor for a vote.

Look at it this way - The Ruger Mini14 has never been affected in any state or nationwide bans. Says much for that company eh?

I speak for myself, but think the 22 is a bit of a small cartridge for me at least.

Ruger Mini 14 is .223, the Ruger 10/22 is .22LR.

And the bill expired a while back. I think the Brady peps were responsible for the bill and it was ineffective as it only banned assault rifles built/imported after 1994. The only thing it was good at was raising the prices on assault rifles through the roof.

He's not asking about the 94 AWB. He's asking about the ban on imported semi-automatic rifles.

You cant really use logic to explain the gun laws in the US. Saiga 12 is cool, but a USAS12, or Streetsweeper is a Destructive Device. You cant import a Rifle, but bring the parts and build it here, oh that is cool. You have moronic politicians who found a hot topic issue that will get them votes and vote with ZERO knowledge on the issue. Just look at the video of that dumb bitch not knowing, or even, you know deducing from the ****ing name, what a "Barrel shroud" is.

I remember when George HW Bush enacted it, via Executive Order. It was in response to the Stockton, CA shootings by a deranged semi-auto AK owner. My guess is that he wanted to be perceived as a "moderate", and distance himself from the conservatives.
Of course, it was a silly ban.

oh...you guys have to live in CA or NY to understand how ridiculous gun laws could be...

    - In California, there is a law specify what type of handgun you could import without special circumstance. the law even regulated what color and finish you can import into CA. For example, a black Sig P229 is legal to import, but a pink one is not.
    - You can not own certain brand of AR-15 or AK in CA, for example Bushmaster or Colt, but you can own other brand such as a S&W M&P.
    - Any semi-auto rifle with pistol grip (AR/AK/FAL..etc) is heavily restricted in CA, while those without pistol grip (Mini14/SU16) are not, despite both have exactly same fire power.
    - Two neighboring counties in California can have complete different policy regarding firearms and carry permits. For example Contra Costa county is a non-issue county, while all her neighbors on east or north side are shall-issue. That means if you live on this side of the bridge, you have no chance for the permit, but if your address is on the other side, it's 100% to get one.
    - you have to pass a handgun safety test to purchase handgun. It is not bad by sound, but the question they ask in the test are not necessary correct according to the law. According to the test, you can not carry conceal weapon at any time, despite in reality it is complete legal if you were issue a permit.

But the worst of all is that gun laws in CA are not very clear, even police officers are often confused by the current interpretation. It is not uncommon that some poor civilian was arrest despite following the law only because the officer in charge has a different interpretation, or still following the older version.

False, Carolyn McCarthy is a firearms expert. Everyone know's a barrel shroud is a "shoulder thing that goes up..." How could you possibly believe she didn't know all about the things she was trying to ban for our safety?

I remember that dumb bitch from Ca. was Dianne Finkelstein (D) looking through a gun catalog and picking the winners and losers purely on aesthetics. If it looked "military" or didn't know what the F*** it was or didn't resemble her Daddy's shot gun, they banned. Just pure ignorance!!

I've searched high and low for the clip of Diane Feinstein attempting to load a double stack 9mm pistol magazine into a civilian AK, only to have an aid take it all away from her.
