Default Are politicians too rich to understand us?

In this age of austerity, America is run by men with wealth that could have leapt from the pages of "The Great Gatsby." The president's worth is estimated at $8.3 million, while Mitt Romney's is placed at a staggering $255 million.

Both have tried to make a character issue out of each other's lifestyle -- conservatives complain that President Barack Obama takes too many vacations and White House aides say that Romney is living on "another planet." Given his wealth, Romney could probably afford to buy one. He has filed an application to bulldoze his $12 million house in La Jolla, California, and build an even bigger one on top of it. How can either of these men empathize with the financial plight of America's middle class?

    ....................................
For the Republicans, you may remember Romney's attempt to make a $10,000 bet with Rick Perry. But the best has to be Rick Santorum's moving claim that he, too, had suffered in the credit crunch becausehis house fell 25% in value. Before you well up, that's a fall from $2 million to $1.6 million.

I think you can be wealthy and privaged and still understand the needs of he many it's not going to happen any time soon given the sources of campaign funds. I think Obama does get it but McCain also seemed to understand the needs of the many.

Because Suddenly Romney is evil being rich.

Funny no one said this when FDR($60Million) and JFK(Kennedy fam $1 Billion) were president.
LBJ had a personal wealth of ($98 Million) yet no one accused him of not understanding the plight of the poor....
But suddenly from the gates of Hell, its Romney the evil he has money, hang him....

In Poland main opposition figure, Jarosław Kaczyński does't have driving license. Does't and did't have wife and children, lives with a cat and does't even have bank account - he uses his moms one. As far i remember, he lived with his mother altrough he was 60.

"In 2007, he said his only sleeping partner was Alik, his cat."

And he was Prime minister of Poland for more than a year.

So dont complain - it could go the other side.

We need a federal version of Montana's Corrupt Practices Act....which Citizen's United has suspended

....this type of corruption continued until 1912, when the people of Montana approved a ballot initiative banning corporate money from campaigns (with limited exceptions). We later banned large individual donations, too. Candidates in Montana may not take more than a few hundred dollars from an individual donor per election; a state legislator can’t take more than $160. And everything must be disclosed.

These laws have nurtured a rare, pure form of democracy. There’s very little money in Montana politics. Legislators are basically volunteers: they are ranchers, teachers, carpenters and all else, who put their professions on hold to serve a 90-day session, every odd year, for $80 a day.

And since money can’t be used to gain access, public contact with politicians is expected and rarely denied. A person who wants to visit with a public official, even the governor, can pretty much just walk into the Capitol and say hello. All meetings with officials are open to the public. So are all documents — even my own handwritten notes and e-mails.

Why? again Who says being Rich makes one evil or unsympathetic to the plight of the poor? Arguably LBJ had the greatest empathy for the poor and he was Hardly poor was he?

No one here has said that.

or unsympathetic to the plight of the poor?
Some rich people are some aren't.

I don't think rich individuals are necessarily the problem. I think there's too much money in the political process itself.

And he could still have run and won in Montana. That's not what that law is about.

Understanding is one thing, caring is another; and because you understand a specific situation doesn't mean you care.

And this question can be asked for any politician in any country. Most of our newly elected representatives in France are very wealthy, not concerned by the reforms and not threatened by the crisis. Or at least not as threatened as the common person.

Class warfare is one of the major memes the Dems are running on this election year. They surely cannot run on their record.

Well how about a single case of corruption caused specifically by the Citizens United decision before holding it responsible? too much to ask? should we next outlaw certain people from running? Italians must be Mafioso, Micks are papists, Baptists must be Klan? its using the logic you've used after all.

I don't know of anything specific. It's a brand new law. Point ceded.

How about the other points that I raised?

No. It's not. What the flying f**k are you talking about? I have not and do not advocate that rich people or anyone else be outlawed from running. If you're going to debate me, be honest enough debate the things I write, not the things you wish I'd write.
