    So did I, until I spent a semester learning quantitative methods at uni. If the people doing it are properly qualified, it's amazing how accurate it actually is.

    I'm more interested in the question set than the numbers myself.

    If you use small enough samples then you are actually guessing. If you guess right twice in a row you've got a trend going. If you've got a trend then you can sell the results to those who like the results. The three levels of falsehoods are lies, damn lies and statistics. I think we've got all three running in the article. There are quite a few scholarly articles about how stats are grossly misused and wrongly interpreted today. The Pew Research center has several posted on their website.

    Yes, the statistical methods are just tools. Wielded correctly, it will give you accurate results. The methods are sound, but the researchers are another matter.
