Neo-Nazi aided Palestinian perpetrators of 1972 Munich massacre, report says
German weekly Der Spiegel bases report on 2,000-page file compiled by Berlin authorities, made public nearly 40 years after the attack at the 1972 summer Olympics, which resulted in the death of 11 Israeli athletes.

Neo-Nazi activists aided the Palestinian terrorists who perpetrated the massacre of Israeli athletes during the Munich Olympics in 1972, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported on Sunday.
The report is based on a 2,000-page file compiled by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which was made public at the request of Der Spiegel, ahead of the 40th anniversary of the Munich massacre, to be marked this coming September.
At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, terrorists from Fatah's Black September organization took hostage members of Israel's Olympic squad. Two Israeli athletes were killed in the initial hostage-taking and nine were killed during a botched German rescue attempt at a Munich airport.
A document released on Sunday, detailing a correspondence between local police in Dortmund and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, reveals that seven weeks prior to the attack a man named Saad Walli, described as having "an Arab appearance", held a suspicious meeting with a neo-Nazi activist named Willi Pohl.

This is quite a revelation...
The connection between the extreme left in Europe (especially in Germany) and Palestinian terrorist organizations is well known and documented but the connection to the extreme right is less documented if at all... further proof that when it comes to Jews/Israelis these people are basically two sides of the same coin.
The Palestinian extremists along with others in the ME, used the facade of being left. There is a belief it was because of the Soviet connection. Nassar was a Socialist, Assad, Saddam etc all because of Soviet money, weapons and influence. I don't think they were real believer in Socialism, they were just opportunists. When the SU ceased to be, the Ba'athist lost power. Near the end for Saddam, he made is a big show to "Play Muslim" and not a socialist. Also this is not unusual, there is also a number of works on the Nazi and extreme Islam connection. Mutual hate is a strong unifying factor. The alliance is political not ideological. There are a lot of other contradiction in political alliances in or world. This just one of them. It was said, "Politics makes strange bed fellows."

He was a neo nazi, criminal arms supplier of the Black September. He apparently supplied hand grenades. But it isn't clear wether he aided Black September out of political conviction or simply because he was a low level criminal arms dealer (it was ridiculously easy to get military weapons in 1970s West Germany)
later he renounced terrorism and became prolific pulp fiction writer (crime and western) and a screenwriter and crime novellist who even won some literature prizes.
Weird.
He also published a autobiography in 1979 called "blinded: from the papers of a terrorist" and serveral other non fiction books on terrorism but he hasn't published anything since the early 90s.
Another interesting revelation in the report is that the German police knew about his involvement, but avoided arresting him, fearing Black September may attempt to take new hostages to get him released.
Apparently Pohl was arrested while trying to aid Black September in carrying out "reprisal" attacks against West Germany but was released 4 days after recieving a 2 years prison sentence and left for Beirut.
No offense to our German friends, as I'm sure many things have changed, but the way West Germany conducted itself after the massacre was simply appalling.

As much as I admire Willy Brandt, his stance on terrorism was his greatest mistake.
International terrorism was simply seen as not Germany's problem and since 90% of all terrorist acts were at least on face commited to free imprisoned terrorists, the idea was to prevent those by simply not having any international terrorists imprisoned.
This approach definitely changed under Schmidt two years later.
Since I opened the thread, Haaretz locked the report in its "paid edition". (That's the reason I added a new link to a shorter report.)
What I remember reading in the Haaretz report is that the German Police discovered his involvment in the Munich massacre, but decided to not arrest him by fear Black September may take hostages to get him free.
He was arrested later for his involvement in another crime. (weapons detention.) Sentenced by the court for 2 years in jail, he was released 4 days later for the same reason.

He was sentenced for illegal posession of firearms.
He and his accomplice met a former SS member and were caught in posession of the same type of hand grenades as used in the Munich attack.
Btw, his accomplice had the last name of Abramowski.
For some strange reasons, the Blums, Rosenbergs and Abramowskis always become neo nazis
Perhaps they were tired of being taken for teh juice?
But the right wing scene of the 70s is not very well researched.
Back then neo nazis were more anticommunist than anything else as there were hardly any foreigners and almost no jews in Germany.
Many of their paramilitary organisations were loosely connected to Gladio and other right wing/anticommuninst networks sponsored by the CIA as anticommunist partisans in case of WW3.
With the left leaning political climate of the 60s and 70s, they needed all the anticommunists they could get.
A real crackdown on the first generation of neo nazis only began in the late 70s/early 80s when the paramilitary groups were banned and the right wing mainstream parties put under close scrutiny.

In the summer of 1972 Black September contacts the Red Army Fraction or R.A.F., a German terrorist group. In August the R.A.F. begins monitoring security around the olympic village, supplying Black September with pictures of targets and details of routines. Willi Voss, a former neo-nazi, was an R.A.F. activist of the time.
