unfortunately as our economy continues to shed manufacturing and engineering jobs, and we have a government that makes no grand investment in science and technology, these jobs are starting to make up a greater and greater percentage of our overall job market...which may explain the increasing reliance upon government programs.

I (seriously) thought Hooters would be well rewarded

Over here McDonalds is not that bad; Iīm not sure what its wage is but Iīve met poeple who worked there and they donīt complain at all. As a matter of fact, itīs even appreciated in a resume, depending on where you apply (and I donīt mean another fast food places).

    Interesting read, thanks !

I am not. But really....fry cook union? Turn around on most of these jobs is less than 6 months.

EDIT: Besides, what will be their bargaining chip? Their job is designed to be easily replaced. They aren't skilled labor. If someone who scoops ice cream for a living (See numbers 3, 15, 17) strikes, someone with their "Skillset" can be found....anywhere. It isn't like construction where there is a skill set mastered over years, or teaching where there is a relatively lengthy and expensive certification process. There is no leverage with which to collectively bargain.

As far as Hooters is concerned, you have to meet certain qualifications that many do not possess.

Because so many of those workers have been there 20-30 years. Usually most are entry level kids. We should give them 60 bucks an hour to deliver your meatza, meatza pie and buffalo wings.....

Exactly! The majority of folks working there won't be there long enough to be promoted. I worked at a Tim Horton's years ago, and the turnover in employees was very high.

Not to mention fast food franchises have a very bottom-heavy workforce, they don't need a lot of supervisors and managers. So where are you going to get promoted to? Chief burger-flipper?

    True.

I can get a little knee jerk when it comes to employment.

My kids are working this summer.

As a dishwasher/prep/dessert help, and turndown service /waitress.

High school and college kids. Basically minimum wage, which is what? $8.50 an hour? I can live with that...They aren't supporting families...
