Strangely, when we went to school, patriotic songs were not banned by the principal, creating a political controversy. If they had, do you seriously think that local politicos would not have gotten involved? Fat chance.

Hahaha The song sucks. It's not patriotic, it's douchey. I'll admit that we sang sh*t like "Feelin' Groovy" But we also sang songs with lines like:

    Ye ride a goodly steed
    You may know another master
    You forward come with speed
But you'll learn to back much faster

    For the rifle
    For the rifle
    In my hands
    will prove no trifle...

I didn't look that up. I remember it from 5th grade. There was also a mention of Johnny Stark in there...Hardcore. Yeah. Dead Charlton Heston would get a woody over that.

Yeah, there would have been no political controversy at all if those NYC public school kids had sung that. I wish they had, with Mayor Bloomberg in the audience.

Was that because you were skipping class that day with your leather jacket and mullet and proto-Raybans?

In those days it was grease and leather jackets. Mullets had yet to be invented.

So far as the 'adult lyrics'...
The lyrics mention only men. Maybe that's why it's so controversial nowadays

And then they could have had a 20oz bottle of some regular soda (sugar and all) to quench their parched throats.

Creepy to see kids being used for political propaganda. Kids and politics mix as well as priests and altar boys.

You didn't like my song? I believe it dates to after the Revolution or during. It's called "For the Rifle" I think.
