Default S Korea buying 2000 used MRAPs from US

The U.S. Department of Defense recently agreed to sell 2,000 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles to Korea that were used in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Korean government is planning on purchasing MRAPs at $85,000 per vehicle, significantly less than the typical $2 million price tag.

Some might say it's insane to sell those at that price, but I'm pretty sure US is more than happy to unload those, and to an ally who could really use them.

We have 27,000 MRAPs. The Army wants to keep 18,000. We've got a few to hand over for cheap. The shipping costs are probably gonna be a bitch, though.

I'd like to see some of the African countries get some - especially for AMISOM and/or ECOWAS. The MRAPs we have might be too big for Africa, though.

I saw a video of them being used in Somalia by Peacekeepers. They are great vehicles and should be fine for any location.Hell we had no infrastructure. No roads and canals on both sides of the dirt strips called roads that some times both tires would be a hair away from going into canals on either side.If they are good enough for Afghanistan they are good enough for any location.

I would like to see some go to the Philippines. They could really use them.

I wonder what use SK will make of them? Perhaps for DMZ patrols?

Cool. I've only seen the older SA Casspirs and RGs. That looks like a Buffalo with a Ugandan ground guiding it.

MRAP will struggle in sub-Saharan Africa during the rainy seasons....tracks will deal with the muddy hinterlands much better than wheeled MRAPs.

I'm surprised the Army wants to keep so many.

Thanks, but they are too heavy and will bog down on the mud in the rainy season. Learned this with the Simbas and V-150, hence the push for future battle taxi's to be tracked.

I think the vast majority of them are going into motor pools. Whatever we're calling pre-positioned contingency stocks these days.

I am not talking about APCs. I am talking about road vehicles for internal security, convoy escort, moving very high-value cargo and even riot control. Tracks tear up roads and require a lot of expensive maintenance, so they would not be used for such duties. The MRAPs should be good for that sort of work.

Ah, LOGRuns and what not, then yeah they could be used. Augment the Simbas on the role of convoy escort. The Army has an ongoing project for a Security and Escort Armored Vehicle. So it would really just be a factor of how expensive shipping those would be.

I imagine the police in the more remote islands would not mind having one of those at their main station for raids into hostile villages to arrest particularly dangerous suspects. I would sure rather face a potential ambush in an MRAP than an unarmored SUV or pickup.

If we ever get them, those MRAP's will be relegated to convoy runs on the main Islands and some bigger ones. The remote areas would more likely have bridges with a max payload of 5-10 tons. An MRAP is around 13 tons and up so that would place a big strain on the local infrastructure, plus if those get stuck in the mud, I would think due to its size it would take another MRAP to pull it out or specialized equipment, so most likley it would be the Army that would have the recovery equipment.

Could be used as a mobile pill boxes for checkpoints when rebs act up, more to appease civilians in an area due to its huge presence alone.

From my own experience they struggled enough as it is in afghan. These vehicles are udder sh!t compared to Bushmasters, slow, WAY to heavy, un-ergonomical, ridiculous suspension, no wear to tie your gear down on the inside ect, ect. But hey, they're going cheap and who wouldn't turn down such a good deal, spose they could be retro-fitted if need be.
