Why would the Olympics be immune to these inconveniences any more than helicopter procurement or road building? Either you expect the government to be infallible (hah) or you have a backup plan and deal with the situation. We haven't "failed" to host anything. The event hasn't even started yes, so I'm curious how you've deemed it a failure.
They're not off work just because they're not in Afghanistan. Unless they're actually on leave, they'd be doing something, whether it be training, maintaining equipment etc.
It's not ideal. I didn't claim it was, but to describe it as "frightening", "a crisis" or "a fiasco" is blowing it out of proportion entirely. Ultimately the additional cost is miniscule compared to what we've already commited to the Olympics
It is, and I hope that there's some sort of action taken against to recoup some of the costs them once the Olympics are over. However it's not the end of the world.
