Russian Moves Compel Uzbekistan to Leave Security Bloc

    Jun. 28, 2012 - 12:09PM | By AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

MOSCOW — Uzbekistan on June 28 formally pulled out of a Russian-led regional security alliance after protesting Moscow’s plans to deploy a rapid reaction force for Central Asia near its borders.

The decision to leave the Collective Security Treaty Organisation comes as a blow to Russia’s efforts to reassert its authority in the resource-rich region in the face a continued diplomatic and economic push from China.

Yeah OK, good news about what exactly?
Or do you just consider anything that is bad for Russia, good news for you?

    And why 'finally'?

Uzbekistan was always a loose cannon there. I'm sure that Russia hinted them to go away if they are only going to stop everything.

Just Karimov's latest zigzag. Uzbekistan has problems with Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan (read: almost all of its neighbours), and just a couple of weeks ago denied military access to Kazakh troops in transit to Tajikistan for a SCO military excersise.

It's a shame because the country and people themselves are quite friendly to Russia, but Karimov's politics are far too unstable; he switches between pro-Western and pro-Russian policies every 3 years or so and any progress that has been made is broken again. Hell, just at the start of this month Putin visited Tashkent and signed agreements on economical integration, discussed security issues relating to Afghanistan, etc... relations looked on the mend. But perhaps Uzbekistan exiting the CSTO is a part of all this - who knows.

Yup. It's interesting becuse Uzbeks are usually smarter than Tadjiks . Of course Tadjikistan needs more Russian assist at their borders but it still stange.

Well better them to leave then stay in and put forth obstacles after obstacle. Maybe this will make CSTO more streamlined.
