The bill would spend about $100 billion on federal highway programs over two years, but puts off the politically tricky decision on how to pay for them after that.
Since 2008, Congress has three times dipped into the national general treasury to borrow a total of $34.5 billion to keep transportation programs going.
Congressional bargainers reached an agreement earlier this week on the $6 billion college loan portion of the bill that would avert a doubling of interest rates beginning Sunday on federal loans to 7.4 million students.
Seems like congress went a little spend happy right before leaving for vacation.

I wonder how many $billions$ went to white elephant mass transit and high speed rail projects? I bet a nice chunk came here to Seattle for our own mini-'Big Dig'; the Alaskan Way Viaduct being replaced by a miles-long underground freeway along the waterfront. Transportation projects are so frequently rife with waste, fraud and abuse. They are passed out like political plums to the most powerful dirtbags on The Hill.

Ought, glad I am not the only one who can see that underground disaster is a waste. I am way south of King county.

I will be staying the hell out of it. We are in an earthquake zone, and an underground tunnel right on the waterfront is idiotic. Even a small tsunami would flood it out instantly, and a really big earthquake would probably just crack it open and let the sea in. I think it is a freakin' deathtrap.

This was a pandering move. Obama knows college students will vote for him in large numbers. Nevermind that most of these students either have mommy and daddy paying their tuition or hold loans through private lenders.

Everytime they increase infrastructure spending, they should decrease welfare spending. People on welfare can go pick up a shovel and work on the road.

I don't know if this will help him with the students who are now sitting in their parents basements wishing they had a job.

I think it was initially an offer obama gave to the republican congressmen that they couldnt refuse. I guess the R's who voted for it weren't prepared to answer for saying no to it in the first place.

When interest rates rise on the trillion$+ non-defaultable student loans, a fresh can of crazy is going to be opened up.

See, this is the crux of the issue. Do you think Nancy Pelosi's constituents give a rats ass that she's mental? No. They have one of the most powerful Reps as theirs. She only has to keep them happy to get reelected. She influences sh*t that benefit them. Like Charley Rangel etc, and all of those dimwits on the other side of the aisle too. Bring in local money, pay homage to your special interests that funnel you money and you stay in power. Simple really. You jokers are pissed off that Roberts followed the letter of the law on healthcare but that other bullsh*t ruling on campaign finance was far more poisonous to the liberty tree....

Exactly, CJ. I was never in favor of a term limits amendment; my reasoning being the constituency can just vote the bad blood out. But now I think it is necessary. A total of 12 years service combined house or Senate. The first thing that gets chucked is the Congressional retirement. You get a salary, No retirement, no health insurance after you leave office.

Isnt that the whole point? getting the most money and projects to your state/district? BOTH SIDES representatives only truly care about the people who affect them, and that are their constituents. Id be curious to see if any politician is willing to turn down 500 million dollars to build some sort of green energy plant in their town. Maybe Ron Paul.
