Don't go clouding the issue with pertinent facts, Dom. Don't take into account that the Bearcat is to be shared by the U cops + 2 other agencies and most likely won't be stored/garaged at Berkely

One thing that has always left me scratching my head is the jillions of different LE organizations in the US.

I totally understand the Federal and State cop org stuff.

I even get the city/county cop org stuff.

What leaves me scratching my head is the university cop type orgs......I would have thought it would make more sense for say a huge university like Penn State University to be policed by the city police department in which it is co-located......I find that quite odd.

I don't know for sure, but I think it's all about control. The university admin can dictate what they want their cops to do. Plus, any money the UPD makes with traffic & parking fines and such goes to the school, not the city/county. In many cases "townies" don't necessarily like the colleges, too.

Some universities actually own more land and have larger budgets than some small towns, plus they don't want the local government poking their noses into what they consider to be the school's business.

Wouldn't that be considered "cruel and unusual punishment"?

Yeah, I said it) While most of its students are on the left politically, the same can be said for almost every University in the USA. On the other hand, non University Berkeley residents are some of the most radical left wingers in the Country. I would be willing to bet that most of the Occupy crowd seen in the area lately are not students. Berkeley, no matter how hippie it is, is a hard school and the serious students have better things to do. Berkeley city fathers letting the homeless run rampant and refusing to enforce laws causes a lot of problems there.
    So there.
what he said. UC chancellors always fight the city over demolishing people's park which is just a cesspit for homeless when it's actually UC property. most of the protestors and professional hippies are city/bay area residents. the students are too busy studying/partying or some combo thereof. that's all the southwest side of campus. i was an engineer on northside and stayed in the southeast side near greek row etc which is quite nice towards the claremont resort etc.

Still one of the best schools in the country and proud to be a golden bear!!
