Well WW1 certainly would be great in the TW engine.. but as mentioned probably rather boring after a while.

How about the 30 years war? In terms of grand strategy the religious aspect would be interesting and all the different small states would provide lots of opportunities for diplomacy.

In terms of weapons it was the time where it transitioned from swords etc to guns... so a bit of everything.

Problem is that the classic field battle TW portraits died in the Summer of 1914.
You can't simulate trench warfare with TW.
Either you get a totally unrealistic classic field battle or you command a very small fraction (battalion - regiment size) of a larger battle.
Not to mention that there was no maneuver and pretty much all moves were pre planned.
Individual initiative and unit maneuvering in WW1 was done up to company level, not higher.

Rome is great, better than medieval as the middle ages as there were actual states not feudal societies in antiquity.
For my part I would've loved a Renaissance: total war, lets say from the Reformation until 1700 or so.
Transition from armored cavalry and Pikemen to musket armed Line Infantry, transition from boarding combat and Galleys to Ship of the Line engagements.
Also this is the last age you can decently handle on a European map, as colonies at that time only played a role as suppliers but not as military theaters.

That's another good idea. Maybe 15th-late 17th centuries?

But why would a WWI game be limited to just WWI? Why not just start the game in 1900 and end it in 1950 or thereabouts?

    Not that much yet.

The world map includes Europe, Asia and Africa (or at least big parts of these)
Carthago is seen in the demo battle shown to the press. You can play and seemingly modify your own barbarian tribe as well.

No but I hope they wont repeat the idiot super egypt with units from the Bronze Age New Kingdom Army of Ramesses II. that stomped all around the globe with weapons obsolete a thousand years before Rome was founded.

Not to mention the Celts who were even worse.
They can retain the burning pigs though

The hellenistic kingdoms could have some pretty outlandish but historic units anyway like giant self-moving siege towers or giant galleys, the largest Catamarans with 2000 oars.

With almost no faction limit they now can include all of the powerful greek city states and Hellenistic Kingdoms as own factions.
So no more "Greek Cities", but Syracuse, Thebes, Sparta, Epirus, Ephesus etc.
But this generally depends on the starting era, if they start in early Republican times there could even be other italian nations like Samnites, Etruscans Campanians etc.
As they say "start from the scratch" this probably means you play ab urbe constitutione

This would also enable a pretty extensive tech tree, starting from greek style roman phalanx via the manipular order to the Marian reforms.

Be sure to follow this mod if you're not already: Dominion of the Sword.

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=492

Been in development since about 2006 or 2007.....I've been waiting for it since then......they say it's "near" a beta release.

    Your not.

I hope the next step will be making MTW 3 after this.

Anyone knows exact release date? Some sources says spring 2013, and others december 2013.

Awesome! Some weeks ago I started a new game of the Roma Sur****** II mod for Rome: Total War. All the time I had thought how awesome Rome would be with modern graphics, better AI and a far larger map.

I just hope they don't dumb down the economy part too much. It sounds like they want to place the focus on warfare, with less time spent for infrastructure, economy and empire building. I'm crossing my fingers they still keep many opportunities to improve settlements and provinces. I for one have always loved the possibility to spent dozens of minutes per turn with planning, building and constructing my indomitable empire.

    Awesome news!

I wasted more hours in RTW with the Rome total realism mod than any other game
    Can't wait for Rome II.

I have not played any other game more than I played the Extended Greek mod.

Then it was Stainless Steel MTW 2 mod, still playing it.

    Some new details / rumors:

    - Duelling soldiers like in Shogun and Empire are replaced with a formation fighting system
    - Individual soldiers are not synchronized anymore (when running for example)
    - Soldiers within the same unit can perform different actions (first line defends with shields, second line attacks with spears over the shields for example)
    - Seemingly many buildings that can be occupied

Now that's odd. I have yet to read about a unit of archers to be stationed in a house during an ancient battle. The rest sounds okay though, especially for Phalanx style fighting
