Default Mali: ancient landmarks destroyed by radical islamists

By F. Brinley Bruton and news services

World cultural body UNESCO was set to create a special fund to protect Mali's heritage on Tuesday after al-Qaida-linked Islamists attacked historic and religious landmarks in the city of Timbuktu for a third day, breaking down the door to a 15th century mosque that -- according to legend -- had to remain shut until the end of the world.

A UNESCO committee also called for a mission to go to Mali to work with local and national leaders to stop what it called "wanton destruction." (...)

Couldn't help thinking of March 2001, when the Buddhas of Bamiyan were destroyed in Afghanistan.

It's such a shame. Those savage hordes are destroying the cultural heritage of an entire region. West Africa is turning into another hotbed of Islamism.

Islamist fighters in northern Mali have planted anti-personnel mines around the town of Gao which they took control of last week, residents have said.

The move is intended to stop a potential attack by Tuareg rebels with whom they have fallen out.

Tuareg rebels and Islamist groups initially fought together to take over northern Mali in April after a coup.

One doesn't stop the Tuareg with a few land mines. Haji has made a big mistake back stabbing the Tuareg in order to keep all the rape and plunder for himself.
