World cultural body UNESCO was set to create a special fund to protect Mali's heritage on Tuesday after al-Qaida-linked Islamists attacked historic and religious landmarks in the city of Timbuktu for a third day, breaking down the door to a 15th century mosque that -- according to legend -- had to remain shut until the end of the world.
A UNESCO committee also called for a mission to go to Mali to work with local and national leaders to stop what it called "wanton destruction." (...)

It's such a shame. Those savage hordes are destroying the cultural heritage of an entire region. West Africa is turning into another hotbed of Islamism.

Islamist fighters in northern Mali have planted anti-personnel mines around the town of Gao which they took control of last week, residents have said.
The move is intended to stop a potential attack by Tuareg rebels with whom they have fallen out.
Tuareg rebels and Islamist groups initially fought together to take over northern Mali in April after a coup.
Well after Western support of islamists in Libya they are emboldend. Just like afghanistan the area will need "liberation".
One doesn't stop the Tuareg with a few land mines. Haji has made a big mistake back stabbing the Tuareg in order to keep all the rape and plunder for himself.
