dude, you are wrong. it took several wars to pacify Tatars for example.. and many other nationalities of which Russia consists.
it is all about civilizing them. one could argue that the amount of resources being dumped into Chechnya is a sheer waste.
those do not consider that instead of huge monetary spending there could be another war, which is: 1) will require much more money 2) is dangerous for Russia's ideology and democracy.

so changing them will work, it will work with money, more money Russians spend on making Chechnya a better place will return with huge profits.
as for Stalin, he was a smart man, but his preposition was much worse than that of current Russia. he had less choice of how to deal with the minorities, some of which he personally hated.

    Except for the Ottoman-style mosque.
Still nice what they done with the practical blank slate created. Hope it stays more-or-less intact.
What's the building with the Orthodox art all inside it?

From what I have seen and heard, Erbil seems to be extremely up-and-coming.

Grr don't like "this part of Russia". It's like Iraq/Astan would be a part of America...

In this forum you can talk to Chechens, look at construction pics and ask them about specific projects and so on. They don't seem so uncivilised to me, just the same sort of Russian-speaking people as everyone else.

And about where the money is coming for reconstruction. I suspect that it's not out of people's taxes (which a lot of people still dodge anyway, while whining about how their taxes are going to here or there), but rather from our natural resource revenues and so on - which are the shared legacy of the entire country. BTW, Gazprom and Rosneft have complete control over all the gas & oil deposits in Chechnya (although there isn't such a great amount left nowadays).

Investment in Chechnya is the 3rd highest in the N. Caucasus BTW (after Stavropol and Dagestan, which are way ahead of everyone else); so I think that there are jobs and so on being created there.

Very nice pictures indeed, looks quite beautiful!

I am slightly worried at the veiling going on among the women though...we can thank Saudi dollars for that though :/

Very very nice overall. What're the plans for the river? Gonna add stone slabs to the banks sometime? Leaving it like it looks so far is meh.

You can thank Kadyrov for that. He issued dress codes for women.

    George?

    Thank you George.

More Photos of Fearless from RIA Novosti:

Grozny is a city in the North Caucasus in southern Russia and is the capital of the Chechen Republic. Photo: View of central Grozny and the Akhmad Kadyrov Mosque.

Grozny is situated on both banks of the Sunzha River, a tributary of the River Terek (the Chechen name for Grozny is Sunzha-City).

The foundation stones for the Grozny Fortress were laid on June 22, 1818. The spot chosen for it was approximately six kilometers from the entrance to the Khankalsky Gorge (the Khan Kale tract), which lies between low ridges and was considered impassible. Photo: Akhmad Kadyrov Mosque in Grozny today.

It took 5,000 Russian soldiers four months to build the fortress. In those days this location was considered to be the most volatile place in the North Caucasus, which is why the fort was called Grozny (or Formidable). Photo: view of Grozny today.

Between 1851 and 1854, while serving in the Caucasus, a young Leo Tolstoy visited the fort on several occasions. Photo: view of Grozny today.

In late 1994 and late 1999, the city was captured by Russian troops, and in August 1996 by the combined forces of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. The city suffered terribly during these assaults. Photo: Akhmad Kadyrov Mosque (foreground) and the Grozny-City high-rise complex (background).

Grozny is currently undergoing active restoration. Photo: View of the mosque built inside the new government complex in Grozny.

Whatever you might think of the Islamic religion, Mosques have to be one of the most attractive looking buildings out there.
