ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani police official says thousands of people beat a man to death, and burned his corpse after he was accused of desecrating the holy Quran.

A senior police officer Mohammed Azhar Gujar said that in the incident on Tuesday in the Ahmedpur East area of Punjab’s Bahawalpur district, attackers stormed a police station where the man was being interrogated.
He said the victim seemed to be mentally unstable. He was arrested after residents said he threw pages of the Quran into the street.
While the man was being questioned, some people started making announcements over mosque loudspeakers, urging residents to go to the police station and punish him.

I simply can't wrap my head around what a fucked-up place Pakistan is. Humanity has stood on moon, wiped out pestilence and mastered cloning and yet thousands zerg one poor bastard and beat him to death over a book thrown in the gutter. He's said to have been mentally stable for heaven's sake! At a civlized place people would shrug that off, pick the damn thing up and call it a day.

Not picking on you, but I'm illustrating a point. Say, if there is a button in front of you, and all you have to do is to push it to drop that MOAB. Would you?

I'm interested as to what the police inside the station did. Did they try to prevent the crowd from storming the station, or did they just stand aside and let it happen?
