Very cool. Love the Aidrian helmets and the Vickers gun.

I first read if them in my freshman year in high school. The house committee on Un-American activities had them listed. During the cold war anything red was a no-no. Maybe why E. Hemingway was nervous. A good book, For Whom the Bells Toll.

Also, George Orwell's "Homage to Catelonia" is excellent.

Personally I'm out of delaware, but we have people all up and down the east coast. This event was in west virginia, and we had guys from Vermont, new york, pennsylvania, maryland, and virginia. we have guys from as far south as south carolina, but they weren't able to make it. That giant storm put a damper on things unfortunately. Our next event is in New jersey in september.

There was a small memorial when I was in school at the UW in Seattle, next to the Husky Union Building. Later a lot of these guys were labelled "pre-mature anti fascists" or some such. Some guys with a lot of experience even lost out just a few years later in WWII.

I agree. Orwell got shot in the throat IIRC, almost died.

Delaware? WTF? I thought you were French! I guess because of your name.

I'm curious - did the Nationalists have regular uniforms? It seems it would be hard to keep track of friendlies as a Republican.

Very nice set up. Glad to see some reenacting in the U.S. from a period that I find extremely interesting.

The Nationalist forces were always uniformed except for irregular militias (Even regular militia units i.e. Carlists, Falagne etc. had their own uniforms). Of course uniforms varied from different units/regiments (don't forget that there were African, German, Italian, Portuguese, and various other foreign units fighting under the nationalist banner) but men in the same unit would generally have the same appearance.

Even with that being said I can imagine friendly fire resulted in countless deaths, even for Nationalists who had uniforms. I recall reading about a unit of Irish Fascist volunteers that was nearly wiped out when it came under fire from a friendly Spanish Falangist militia unit.
