DHS already has its own fleet of drones, and several local and state agencies are looking into buying smaller drones for surveillance. But odds are pretty good you're not going to see a Reaper or Predator doing lazy 8's over the border, and firing off Hellfires at a couple Donkies loaded with bales of weed, or a Coyote when he cranks off a few rounds from his AK at the local sheriff's patrol units.

They can't just go out and crank up a couple of Apaches, load them up with ammo, and fly off to do whatever. There's a TON of regulations that govern what the equipment, and especially ammo, can and can't be used for.
I meant if the Apaches fired into Mexico, not the Texas troopers. Sorry for not specifying.

I just came home from watching Savages. All you need to mess with the Zetas is some good buddies with good training.

Send in Arnold instead. He can show the Zetas how to let off a little steam.

Don't they need a dozen or so to patrol Falcon Lake?

With the level of violence and armament of the players on the southern side of our border, instead of Texas DPS going Apocalypse Now, I think the coasties should be patrolling the Rio Grande and larger lakes to support local law enforcement. They need heavily armed and armored fast boats. For the Zetas and other cartels, belt-fed weapons, 40mm grenade launchers and RPGs are the norm. Open fiberglass boats with machine guns and a few ballistic panels are not going to cut it if the bad guys decide to really go to war with river cops.

Didn't the CG also have ATK helos chasing small planes and boats in the Gulf?

DPS has lots of small police boats. These heavily armed ones are presumably supposed to provide support for the many smaller boats should they stumble into a firefight, and to run smuggler interdiction patrols at night, when the recreational boaters have gone home. With the vast majority of recreational boats back at their docks, it should be fairly easy for one of these armed boats to use their FLIR to spot boats moving across the lake from the southern shore. And I am sure there are a whole lot more DPS boats out on the river at night on patrol than just these six.

Yeah, it's just that Falcon lake is a major corridor for Zetas running drugs. That jet skier that was kill is proof of their presence there and it was on the US side of the lake if I'm not mistaken. Hopefully we have a greater presence there. The same day and just before the shooting the Zetas shook up a couple guys just bass fishing. Crazy how brazen these guys are.

What is amazing to me is that there have not yet been the kind of all-out firefights between American law enforcement and the Zetas that there has between Mexican government security/military forces and the Zetas. I guess the Zetas do not want a war with us right now, but that could change at any moment. I fear for our LEOs along the border.

Yeah, with the fire power these guys have those poor BP agents are a high risk job.

From what I read those Zetas that shot and killed that skier were killed by their own guys. They want to keep a low profile and a couple of their members got trigger happy and paid the price as both Mexican and US police know their presence there. The last thing they want is a **** load of PBR type craft patrolling the lake.

No, but they do have a Helicopter Interdiction Squadron (HITRON), which is helo with a sniper and .50cal rifle for maritime interdiction work. If a boat won't stop, the sniper shoots out the boat's engine.

The Zeta's aren't stupid, they know that if they start shooting up the US side of the border, things will not go well for them. The fastest way for them to draw the wrath of the US government down on their head would be for them to start targeting US law enforcement, of killing large number of civilians on the US side of the border. The US will only show so much restraint before members of the various drug gangs start getting late night visits by members of units that don't officially exist.
