    Marines with 1st Law Enforcement Battalion, I Marine Expeditionary Force, begin their training exercise aboard Range 107 at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif., July 7. The newly activated battalion is participating in large scale exercise, Javelin Thrust. More than 5,000 Marines from the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade, part of I Marine Expeditionary Force and Marine Forces Reserve are participating in the exercise. The large-scale exercise is the first in a three-part continuum, culminating with a Navy and Marine Corps led amphibious exercise Dawn Blitz in 2013. Javelin Thrust is the largest annual Marine Corps Reserve and active duty training exercise, comprised of reserve Marines from 38 states, 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, 9th Communication Battalion, and 1st Law Enforcement Battalion. The 33 Canadian Brigade Group from Ottawa, Canada is participating as a coalition force, with a higher headquarters based at Camp Pendleton.

The major engagement of the multi-weeklong war during Exercise Hamel 2012, 50 Marines fend off the advancing Australian Army 1st Brigade before eventually being overrun. Exercise Hamel 2012 is a multi-national training evolution between the U.S. Marine Corps, Australian Army and New Zealand Army, aimed at certifying the Australian 1st Brigade for operational deployment. The 31st MEU is the only continuously forward-deployed MEU and is the nation's force in readiness in the Asia-Pacific region.

    Sea Breeze 2012 Starts in Odesa. Participating nations: Azerbaijan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Canada, Georgia, Germany, Israel, Moldova, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, Sweden, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, USA, Turkey.
    Sea Breeze 2012, co-hosted by the Ukrainian and U.S. navies, aims to improve maritime safety, security and stability engagements in the Black Sea by enhancing the capabilities of Partnership for Peace and Black Sea regional maritime security forces.
    The focus of Sea Breeze 2012 training will be counter-piracy operations, search-and-rescue operations, live-fire exercises and maritime security activities. The exercise will also provide its participants with numerous opportunities to operate together and develop working relationships. The maritime security activities will include maritime boarding procedures, maritime interdiction operations and maritime domain awareness training, all designed to identify and intercept at-sea criminal activities such as unlawful fishing, piracy, and trafficking persons, drugs or illegal weapons.

    A German instructor and Spc. Edward Gil of the 841st Engineer Battalion from Miami, Fla., discuss his weapons marksmanship after his first attempt at firing a German weapon. Soldiers are able to compete for the German Schützenschnur gold, silver, or bronze marksman skills award while building their skills and cultural relationships.

    U.S. soldiers from the 841st Engineer Battalion, out of Miami, Fla., are given the opportunity to be guided by German army instructors while firing the German MG3 machine gun, the German P8 hand gun, and the German G36 during the Schützenschnur range day, July 7. This unique experience helps soldiers increase their general weapons familiarization, marksmanship, and cultural awareness.

    Exercise Precision Support 12-1 conducted between 03 July 12 – 28 July 2012 is the provision of Airbase Operations for the successful and efficient conduct of Precision Red, C130 Air Operations. Combat Support elements under the exercise title of Air Operations Task Unit 006 (AOST006) have established Airbases at three austere airfields, Benning, Samuel Hill and Williamson to enable C130 aircraft to conduct Mission Rehearsal Exercise and aircrew validation. The interoperability demonstrated and practiced by both Airbase and Air Operations highlight the essential requirement for Air Land integration to achieve successful projection of Air Power.


    Departing from the C130 are the members of No. 1 Airfield Defence Squadron at Benning Airfield.
