Default "Forbin" & "HMS Diamond" Air Warfare Destroyers conduct joint training

The Marine Nationale's Forbin Air Defence Destroyer (Horizon class) met her Royal Navy counterpart HMS Diamond (Type 45) in the Mediterranean at the end of June. Off the coast of Spain, the two Destroyers carried out various operational maneuver.

The two vessels first simulated fire engagements in the field of anti-surface warfare with the support of Lynx helicopters of both nations. Then together, they jointly trained to repel air attacks by Rafale and Super Etendard fighters from the French carrier battle group.

Nice low shot, nearly optics-mast level. Funny how similar they look beam-on.

Indeed. They could pass for sisterships in our little naval family.

The NF90 project spawned a whole generation of slightly different frigates and destroyers.

The 90s were very high in NATO (cooperation) programs; nh90, nf90, cv90, cb90 etc.

Yeah that was my lame attempt at saying "why didn't they just stay program partners if they were going to produce such similar vessels?" without saying it.

I wonder why both of the ships have not any kind of anti-aircraft weapon system on the top of the hangar? The Royal Navy one has the Phalanx systems in every side, the ship does not need more although the empty space is huge for something additional. The French one lacks completely of any CIWS..

Italian Horizon get 1 extra 76mm on top of the hangar with Strales guided round system (supposedly, with 3 darts you have 100% to hit incoming target/threat)

    Strales:

The French Horizon get one extra directional Jammer instead:

I was told once that French Navy philosophy/doctrine is to rely more on active Jammers than CIWS.

They have tested in the past and don't trust CIWS especially the "bullet based ones" like Phalanx, because when missile are hit by Phalanx, they are so close to the ship that debris incoming at great speeds still make a lot of damages anyways...

^^ Wow, very good information, tahnk you a lot sir! I did not know that the gun had such capabilities and that the tower has this "secret" guidance system for the shells inside it.

It is interesting to see the different philosophy in the ship armament in many navies. Italians still trust a lot the guns, French the electronics, US a good combination of both etc.
