Apparently I just read that t
o meet the required budget cuts, the US Army wants to halt production of its

    M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tanks,
which are the centerpiece of its force structure.

Bad for US Army don't you think?

    Not really,

MBT'S are useful for large scale conventional war but current wars are against the poorer nations with obsolete equipment. So why have keep building new ones ?

Maintain/upgrade to keep the capability that is currently held but adapt the defence budget to suit current/future requirements.

The A3 is in the works. I'm sure D90 will be in here to clarify.

According to the Associated Press, to meet the required budget cuts, the Army wants to halt production of its M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tanks, which are the centerpiece of its force structure. Since General Dynamics is the only U.S. company that builds main battle tanks, a shutdown of the Abrams production line would dramatically alter the tank industrial base and make it all but impossible to restart production quickly to meet an emergency".

The last large scale conventional war of the USA happened only 9 years ago and there are several locations around the globe with the possibility of the next one.

But I agree, the US Army already owns a lot of tanks and we're talking about newly produced ones. I think the currently available tank fleet suffices for some time

Wouldn't a shutdown of the Abrams production line would dramatically alter the tank industrial base and make it all but impossible to restart production quickly to meet an emergency?

What kind emergency? As long Czar Putin doesn't go 1980s and deploys the 6th Guards Tank Army to the Fulda Gap, there is no real threat the currently available tank formations couldn't deal with. Neither Mexico nor Canada are about to invade US soil and Iran or North Korea can be defeated without starting a WW2 like mass production of Abrams tanks.
