I wonder how both systems would deal with something like this:

    Better than you might think.
If they are anything like the 2 76mm OTO's we had they have a radar proximity fuse , the 76mm fills a 50m sphere with shrapnell at 1 round per 1.5sec , I would assume the sphere would be bigger
    with the 127mm.

The 127/54 is going on board of the German Navy F125s too.

Yes, indeed, after the failure of MONARC.

127mm Vulcano is not for AA/anti missile, 76mm Strales obviously are but at O.T.O Melara they are developing also an antiship/coastal support round for same mount: it would be perfect against somali pirates.
It is about forty years however that MMI uses excusively proximity fuses rounds for antimissile defence: 76mm compatto, 40/70 Dardo and Fast Forty , 76mm super Rapido and now 76mm guided Strales rounds.

the 76mm is going to be a full multi purpose gun, anti-missile, anti-aircraft, coastal fire support with GPS guided and extended range ammunitions and it can switch ammunition type in a few seconds

Not true. The 127mm gun definitely has an anti-aircraft capability.

As a feasibility study it was actually a succes.

But it also showed that retrofitting it to a existing design was cost prohibitive.

Gun have but Vulcano round have not, nor is in sight any development in that sense as there is not any advantage to use it instead of Strales or in the higher end Aster 15.

Wait wut? 50 meters? How is that possible with a tiny 76mm round?

Sorry, I missed that you were talking only about that specific ammunition type.

Yes, failure I guess is the wrong word. In any case the new gun promises a very good range, similar with a missile's one.
