    Pretty much this.

My age is a lesser number than my shoe-size, if you use the continental European measuring units I use instead of US ones. My age only differs 8 years from my shoe US size anyway so that explains a lot.
I'm feeling kind of left out since you don't view me as a troll or a flamer, oh well.

    In all seriousness:
Indeed if they would not have acted and it was a 'fire ship' the consequences for the ship and it's crew could have been a lot worse than a single death. (that does not mean that this death is not tragic)

Having read the first few pages on this .. am surprised that none has mentioned ...the reason's by that not STATING the blatent obvious of being too close ..

1 - Could the occupants speak english

2 - was the boat equipped with a radio was it on a different channel ?

3 - what kind of vessel was it motor boat or a traditional sail boat

I suspect the ship never got a reply back as i believe the vessel wasn't equipped with a radio or the boat's radio was on a different channel and what happend was bound to happen .. , Also how many USN folk are refined in the local dialect when attempting to communicate with the local's over the airwaves and do locals actually know the correct procedures when in the vicinity of NAVAL vessel's no matter the flag they fly under

pretty stupid question for the experts : on the sea, can you listen to a warning shot from a machine gun 1200 yards away ?

According the the BBC Twitter feed, some UAE official is claiming that the people fired upon were Indian Fishermen.

    Picture this:

a boat is getting close to a USN ship; nobody on board speaks english and radio barely works. They head toward that direction because they want to arrive and they simply ignore that getting close to such ship is dangerous; furthermore, they ignore that the ship is allowed to use force in those waters. Radio signals are broadcasted: no response. Warning shots fired: either ignored ("for me? nah ...") / not listened or maybe "admired" as a funny show. Boat keeps getting closer. Next shots impact on boat.

If no terror involved, and if ROE properly followed (LD), itīs a sad tragedy. And I donīt want to even imagine theyīre on a leizure boat and somebody thought "letīs take a picture" ...

^^ thatīd be my guess :/

    Thank you very much;
I thought that the "first" warning shots were not actually fired at you but "upwards"

Indian media also reporting the same. No official word yet, though.

In Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Karaiyur Fishermen Association President Malairajan said the dead fisherman has been identified as Sekar of Periyapattinam in Ramanathapuram district.

The injured are Muniraj, Panpuvan and Murugan who also hail from Ramanathapuram, he said adding Munira had been admitted to hospital with bullet injuries.

Malairajan said fishermen from Ramanathapuram district were working for Dubai fishing companies on daily wage basis.

1 - Could the occupants speak english - Navy usually has a Local language speaker available

2 - was the boat equipped with a radio was it on a different channel ? - Makes no difference, you see a Warship and it warns you off with warning shots across your bow, flashes you with lights, signal flags, speakers, etc.GUNS are pointed at you, you should realize they are warning you about something.

3 - what kind of vessel was it motor boat or a traditional sail boat

How refined is the RN for similar occurances? theres your likely answer
