Anyone else here see a problem with their ROE?Lake County Sheriff's Office deputies shot and killed a man they assumed was an attempted murder suspect on Sunday, but they now know they shot the wrong man.
In the early morning hours, deputies knocked on 26-year-old Andrew Lee Scott's door without identifying themselves as law enforcement officers. Scott answered the door with a gun in his hand.
"When we knocked on the door, the door opened and the occupant of that apartment was pointing a gun at deputies and that's when we opened fire and killed him," Lt. John Herrell said.
Deputies thought they were confronting Jonathan Brown, a man accused of attempted murder. Brown was spotted at the Blueberry Hills Apartment complex and his motorcycle was parked across from Andrew Scott's front door.
"It's just a bizarre set of circumstances. The bottom line is, you point a gun at a deputy sheriff or police office, you're going to get shot," Herrell said.
Rest In Peace, terrible event.
Lesson here. Never answer your door in the middle of the night... RIP
Hmm...lets see, I knock on your door, and you open it with a gun in your hand, and get shot. I fail to see where the problem is, as most people I know, don't respond to a knock on the door carrying a firearm. It's unfortunate, but I see zero to no issues with their use of force (as law enforcement has Use of Force policies, not ROE).
You have to admit. Any knock on the door in the middle of the night, can't be good.
You don't see what the problem is? The man got shot and killed by the police for doing absolutely nothing illegal assuming the weapon was legal and he was still on his property whilst holding the weapon.
It seems the use of force is not the issue here, I'd react the same way in the cop's shoes, but the major ****up in preparation and execution.
a) choosing the wrong house
b) not announcing yourself as a police officer. That's why police usually yell "Get on the ground, POLICE!" or something similar.
Somebody should lose his job over this and possibly do prison time/pay the man's relatives some damages.
I agree the guy should not have opened the door with a gun in his hand. My problem is with the officers not announcing who they were.
Agreed, at 1:30 AM in the morning if you knock on my door, expect to see a gun barrel.
Exactly. That's how a lot of burglars get in.
Any knock on the door in the middle of the night, and I don't know who it is and no voice command. I'll be at the top of the stairs with an M4 pointed down.
