I've knocked on doors in the wee hours many times. Why?:
    1. Hey buddy, your garage door is open. I don't want anyone to steal your stuff.
    2. Hey buddy, someone just crashed into your mailbox.
    3. Hey buddy, the old guy next door is dead. Did you see anything suspicious?
    4. Hey buddy, the house next door is on fire. You should evacuate your family.

"Hey buddy, do you know who owns that motorcycle and is he here? We're looking for him" can easily go on the list.

No one ever pointed a gun at me. Several asked 'Who the F is it?', to which I replied: "Sheriff's Department"
Most looked to see me in my pretty uniform. Some called 9-1-1 to verify I was a real Deputy.
But you shoot the poor sod afterwards, right?

    I'm not a serious person.

    Seriously.

That is also why I don't take posts claiming cops are busting down doors and shooting everyone on sight in America serious either.

Why not call the cops, say "hey, somebody's at my door and I'm kind of concerned, here's my address" from safely inside the home?
To show his big gun and say "piss off punks"? You know the dream many people buy guns for...
On a serious note: it was unfortunate incident which would be avoided if he had better education about what guns are for, and what to do at front of uniformed police when you are armed (drop gun down or point it as far up as you can. And do this quick.).
Regrettably young people in Europe too have quite perverted ideas about guns, cops, and laws.
    I blame Hollywood.

Somebody was comparing usual knock at the door and this. The difference is huge. It's all about who you expect to be on the other side of the door. "Circumstances". They were expecting or sleepy normal neighbor who would point where the criminal actually lives or the criminal himself. Dude with a gun in hand fits second choice perfectly.

Don't open door with a gun in your hand. It's a direct (sudden?) threat.
Don't point gun at somebody unless your life is being threatened. It's a direct threat.
Don't wave gun on public. It's a direct public threat.

Don't people in US learn such basic things before getting gun lisense?
khmm, may be taking guns from homes is not such horrible idea than?
