Think of italian, spaniard and french trying to understand each other using their respective languages only. There are similar words, some are synonyms, but in the end, different languages.

And Mujo, nice idea !Ex-Yugoslavianese has a special sonority to it, I'll use it.

I see. When I learned Serbo-Croatian 101, our teacher told us about the people around Nis, where it was common not to use all the grammatical declinations of the words. I had immense sympathy for the inhabitants of Nis back then.

The language is called Serbo-Croatian, I don't really consider them seperate languages.
Serbs say "kuca" Croatians say "dom" but we know what the other person is talking about.

Never had any real problems in Macedonia (FYROM) - Slovenes laughed at me but I got there in the end. I can make sense of written Czech but it sounds like gobbledegook to me...

I've never talked to a Macedonian. I've watched Macedonian partizan movies growing up. They had subtitles. I could never understand without them.

I've met plenty Slovenians who spoke and understood Serbo-Croatian. But...IMO, again, I emphasize only IMO, they try to excercise some level of superiority to Bosnians. They are usually kinda assholish. While they can speak and understand, they only spoke Slovenian. So, English it was.

maybe its like Portuguese and spanish, I can understand Portuguese by reading it or if its slowly spoken, but not if its spoken like they usually speak.
