Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has called a "tough butcher" one of the key doctors who helped the wounded Israeli tourists in the July 18 terrorist attack in Burgas during an award ceremony on Wednesday.
The July 18 terrorist attack in Bulgaria's Burgas, also known as the Burgas Bus Bombing, killed 5 Israeli tourists and a Bulgarian bus driver at the Sarafovo Airport near Burgas.
"Where is that, the tough butcher?" Borisov asked in his controversial style of praising during the ceremony in which the Bulgarian government recognized a number of doctors and nurses who helped the more than 30 wounded in the Burgas Bus Bombing.
His words were met with a slight embarrassment and smiles by the doctors at the award ceremony at the Council of Ministers, BGNES reported.
"Once again, let us thank all doctors, nurses, volunteers, especially the doctors from the Medical Military Academy in Sofia who managed to drive in their own cars to the airport in 30 minutes in order to fly off to Burgas; to those, who were on vacation and left immediately from the beach as soon as they heard about the severe incident," Borisov said in a more serious tone.
"These awards are a recognition by the entire society we are only authorized to be an intermediary between them and the society and to present the awards," he added.
The Special Merit Award of the Bulgarian Health Minister was granted to Dr. Asen Kardzhiev from the Emergency Medical Center in Burgas, Dr. Georgi Mitev, Manager of the Burgas Hospital, and Dr. Georgi Pazderov, head of the Regional Health Inspectorate in Burgas, BTA reported.
"I am proud to be a part of this guild that demonstrated his morale, professionalism, and valor in these horrific days in Burgas," Dr. Georgi Pazderov stated upon receiving his award.
Another 15 doctors from the Pirogov Emergency Center in Sofia and the Military Medical Academy in Sofia have also been awarded, as has been MP Galina Mileva, a forensic from Burgas who took part in the autopsies, Bulgarian Health Minister Desislava Atanasova announced.
More than 200 medics took part in the medical rescue efforts after the Burgas Bus Bombing, the minister added.

A woman that was badly wounded and that was interrogated only days after the attack provided details that could back somehow this theory.
She said the terrorist tried to get out from the luggage compartment of the buss bags belonging to tourists in order to find a way to add his bag to the compartment. His behavior generated a quarrel between the husband of this woman and the terrorist. And then… The the bomb exploded.
This version may suggest that the terrorist was not a suicide bomber, that he just wanted to put the bomb in the buss with no intention to take it. But that a second man was present and when he saw the quarrel, he might have though something was going wrong, so he activated remotely the bomb before it was put in the luggage compartment.
Agents in the UK are testing the remnants of a man who is thought to be the suicide bomber who killed six people in Burgas in order to assert whether he was a British national, the Daily Mail reported Friday.
According to the report, which cited media outlets in Bulgaria, security service officials travelled to the eastern European country and took samples from the disembodied corpse of the man who blew himself up, killing five Israeli tourists and a bus driver at Sarafovo Airport last week.

The new line of investigation came as officials released new images of the bomber after reconstructing the remains of his head, which was found over 200ft from the blast.
The attacker’s identity has remained a mystery, with officials now playing down footage released after the attack which showed the suspected bomber as a white man dressed in Bermuda shorts, a T-shirt and a cap.
An unnamed forensic expert working on the investigation told the Bulgarian media that agents of the UK's security service examined the suicide bomber's body parts.
