And now Apple can ban sales of every other smartphone in the world...

Apple has now gotten a broad patent for the gui of smartphones approved which it's likely to use in lawsuits to hinder competitors from accessing certain markets.
To me this once again highlights the faults of the US patent law and I sure hope that it won't stand muster in a court in case of a lawsuit. I really hope that IP rights/patent law is revised, not only in the US but the rest of the world aswell because things are getting ridiculous.
And now Apple can ban sales of every other smartphone in the world...
It seems like a good idea. If they develop something unique for their gadgets, why let others copy it.
Patent law was invented to protect poor inventors against large companies stealing their products.
It has degenerated into a corporate cudgel stiffling all innovation.
Perhaps we should do away with IP law totally, this will slowly throttle all innovation.
They havent developed anything unique yet...
They got a Patent on the overall physical apperance of their devices, like rounded corners...
What should other company release devices with spearpointy, stabby corners ?
Software patents are ridiculous and should disappear.
Unless someone is literally copying source code, it's his own creation where he put in his own work.
Probably even more than Business and industry, Software development is heavily reliant on using good practices, patterns and standards that others came up with.
Over the last decade or so I've noticed an increasingly positive trend for even big companies to share and exchange know-how with the whole community. (Think Google). Apple in that regard is a leech that takes and profits from this but refuses to give. If they now go over to actively harming the industry, they'll be a cancer.
I thought this was about their new connectors, forcing people to upgrade all their wares and equipment. This is doubly worse, though. As a company, I really hate it. They do make some real nice devices, but their looooooong history of litigation is a real turn off. I'm thinking twice about switching to the iPhone when my android contract expires early next year as a result of this thread.
Its kind of funny how the law got turned onside its head, if it wasn't so sad. There has got to be change. Forget they will be - they already are a cancer.
And Jean Luc ALWAYS delivers!
BTW - I propose a new word. Machole. An asshole, who makes themselves even more of an asshole by lauding Apple's superiority in your face.
