Bingo. The only way to go are small independent movie studios, as they've got imagination. All of the big Hollyweird blowhards simply make gargantuan sized Lucky Charm sugary sweet CG eyegasmic nonsense.

Why the need for a remake?
Verhoeven never cared for the novels/source material. He didn't even read them. Also he hated Schwarzenegger as his main actor.
The new Total Recall claims to be a lot closer to the novel and it seems to me they don't really try to remake the original movie but try to make a new movie based on the novel. Just try to see it as that.

Well, that's certainly an annoying trend...
But given that some reboots are to get in different directions, or to get closer to the original material, sometimes, you might get better stories.
Still sad that studios don't want to try originality, but just go for easy cash, remaking stuff "Bigger, with more FX and 3D !!!"
