But what's wrong with something simple and easy like the Glock 21? 13+1 up the pipe, idiot proof, soldier proof, piece of p!ss to look after long-term in the field....and in these financially challenging times...cheap.
I may get lit up for this but I am so glad American military does not apparently think much of Glock. I never understood the hype. I don't find them accurate compared to a decent 1911 or SIGs and their ergonomics are awful IMO.

Ergonomics is a personal thing. Each of us is a tad bit different and for the military or LEO, the have got to fit a wide range of people and those people need to be able to use that firearm effectively.......... as if that can happen. Glocks have a closed ignition system, a 1911, single action cocked and locked has a open ignition system. For a LEO that means doughnut crumbs can get between the hammer and firing pin. For a 03, mud and goo can do the same. Only time I liked the 1911 when I was in the service, is when I did the MP thing. In the Bush no one like them.

For us, to carry something else, meant you carried less of what you really needed................More rifle ammo.

Those are good points. But I will point out, the bigger the grip, the fewer people it will fit. Personally, I would take a SIG 220. And if they could add adjustable backstraps, well that would be icing on the cake.

    M1911A1 Rail Gun

In an email to Marine Corps Times this morning, MARCORSYSCOM says, “Colt Defense LLC, West Hartford, Conn., was awarded a $22,500,000 indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract July 18, 2012 for production, delivery and logistical support of the Close Quarter Battle Pistol. Work will be performed in West Hartford, Conn., and is expected to be completed by July 2017. No contract funds will expire by the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was competitively procured using full and open competition with three offers received. The Marine Corps System Command, Quantico, Va., is the contracting activity.”

The contract came down to a modified version of Colt’s M1911A1 Rail Gun and Springfield Armory’s Full-Sized MC Operator - Source

Marines have always hated the M9 (though individual Marines may well be cool with it) and they didn't want to have a balls-out competition to try and create the next wunderpistol like the JCP program. So they said, "make us the best 1911 you can" and that's what they feel they're getting.

There are better polymer double-stack .45s than the Glock.

I'm a Glock person, never fired an M1911 before, lol.

It's just me but it seems like the Marine Corps seem to be getting a lot of good equipment recently. First the M27 IAR and now the M1911A1 Rail Gun, and let's not forget that they were to first to be issued a Digital camos, oh and them Osprey.

Meh......"better" is a matter of opinion.

FACT is that I carried a Sig P226 in a tropical salt water environment with a fair bit of blueing gone from holster wear........that would rust before my eyes compelling twice daily cleaning and oiling.

Glock don't rust in my experience.

I've shot a lot of M1911s, Sigs in a number of flavors, Glocks in a number of flavors, HKs, Ruger's, CZs, Berettas, Vectors, FNs, etc.

I prefer something very cheap, very simple, and very easy to live with when it comes to pistols, especially if you are stuck carrying it forever and are short on time........but I'm like Hollis....I'd rather carry something else than a pistol and all the associated BS that goes with it.

Marines know what they're doing.......but if it were up to me(which it clearly ISN'T up to me), instead of blowing $5-6K PER PISTOL all up, I'd buy some off the shelf Glocks and put the rest of the money(again if it were up to me) towards any deficiencies in gear/training that my junior commander's had already force ranked in importance.

I know the high speed guys have different needs than line units or even semi/occasionally speedy units.

But I wonder what tangible qualitative differences there would be between a super custom M1911 at $5-6k each all up, or Glock 21s at under 1$ each all up but with an extra $4-5K in ammunition allocation.

I'm sure there's some good reasons why the Marines bought them.....but to me it's just a tool like a hammer....a very expensive, custom hammer.

I'm not really shocked by this much...MARSOC has always loved their M1911's, so this is probably just their replacement process for their ageing MEU (SOC) pistols which were themselves rebuilds on old M1911A1s that were old and beat up in the first place. BLUF is that I personally have never found a handgun more reliable than the M1911A1. My personal ones have thousands of rounds through them and I cannot remember the last time I had a stoppage.

I own an M1911A1 (springfield and kimber, not colt) and personally love the gun for home carry/defense, but I would not choose it as a carry pistol myself. 8+1 is fine by me for a secondary weapon, but in my opinion its heavier and more complicated to care for than other handguns, without any significant advantage that I can find. I would choose it over the issued M9 we use (I've carried one on three deployments) but thats about it.

All this being said its their choice so enjoy them, gents.

Not sure if this has been asked before, but why do they call it the "Rail Gun".
Obviously it doesn't use a Magnetic Linear Accelerator. Is it just because it feature Picatinny Rails and sounds cool?

I have a really small hand for men (actually a lot of women have larger hands than I), but handling double stack weapons is never a problem for me.
Actually, the weapon I shot the best was a .45 USP, even better than my own XD9
