WW II shipwreck yields $38M worth of silver, so far

A British salvage company has hauled up 43.5 tonnes of silver from the wreck of the SS Gairsoppa, a cargo ship sunk in the Second World War off the west coast of Ireland.

More than 1,200 silver bars, worth about $38 million under current market prices, were recovered from the Gairsoppa, a 126-metre, steel-hulled British merchant ship that was torpedoed by a German U-boat in February 1941, about 500 kilometres west of Galway.

They might get 80% of the sales but the the wreck is lying in Irish terroritorial waters .. i suspect they will also be seeking a proportion of the bounty would they not , Because if the Greek Goverment always act like .......... when it comes to those diving the WW1 wreck Lancastria .lying in Greek waters , . the Hospitial ship they often don't like people diving on the wreck for some obscure reason

I think 500km is well outside Irish territorial waters. It's called the Atlantic Ocean.

Their exclusive economic zone extends out to 360km. The wreck is 500km West of Galway. Galway is about 100km East of the Western most part if Ireland. So depending on how much "500km" was rounded, the wreck might be just within the Irish EEZ. I have no idea if that has any bearing on wrecks mind, it's mostly to do with fishing and oil, that sort of malarky.

It's definitely outside the 12 mile territorial waters though.

Part of the reason this company is working this wreck is that they are the same company that had the kerfuffle with the Spanish government a few years back. So they had to switch tracks from what their plans were at that time.

If they forgot to dot their T's and cross their I's on this one, then somebody would get their lawyer card yanked. They didn't forget.

Also the article says they are a British company. Mmmmm, not so much.
