This is the flag they use for the Olympics someone put up the Taiwan flag rather than this one so they took it down and replaced it with the flag THEY chose to represent them.
I know, they replaced it by Chinese Taipei flag, many Taiwanese people in London are so sad about this.

Why can't you change the name and flag to Taiwan? you're still an independent country.

What an incredible amount of bull****. First all the incidents against Israel and now this. The IOC staff needs to be replaced immediately or the original spirit of the Olympic games is becoming nothing but a farce.

it's not well defined. there are a number of people from Taiwan claim that Taiwanese as an ethnicity, and would take offense if outsiders address them as Chinese.
their argument is that Taiwan has slightly different culture than China.

Personally I don't agree with that argument.
In comparison, Californian surely has different culture than Nevadan or Arizonian, even more than between Taiwanese and Chinese.
but no one ever considers Californian as an ethnicity.

Sound like our Russian-Ukrainian deals) I thought if both countries have word "China" in their names that means at least that everyone agreed about who are they are, and Taiwanese shouldn't be mad if someone saying just China(not People's Republic of China (PRC)), and even more - they could troll the continental Chinese saying that THEY are part of China( meaning the ROC. )
But seems like it's more complicated in real life.

It's a little more complicated than that. Compared to other places, Taiwan actually didn't have much contact with China proper for a long long time. Also, add in very early Dutch influences (why we call it Formosa), and other influences like American, and Japanese ownership for a long time, and its pretty clear their culture is very distinct, and much more than between Claifornians and Nevadans/Arizonians. It has had relatively few years of direct Chinese administration, by whatever dynasty.

Az_esm...think of it more like...hmmm, like between "Western" Russians and the Far East Russians...and then magnify it.
